WikiCendekia 2026: Insights from our training of admins in Indonesia
The training materials were developed based on a needs assessment and covered topics such as Pywikibot, abuse filters, MediaWiki namespace editing, and digital safety for administrators. Wikimedia Indonesia also collaborated with the Wikimedia Foundation’s Trust & Safety team to provide resources and presentations on safety within the Wikimedia ecosystem. Participants found the hands-on practice sessions especially helpful and directly applicable to their daily administrative work.
Beyond technical sessions, Cangkruk (peer practice-sharing) and Warung Kopi (small group discussions) created space for peer learning and real-case conversations across projects. A dedicated discussion on the future of Wikimedia adminship in Indonesia highlighted key challenges, including limited representation in local-language projects, increasing vandalism and misinformation, and the impact of generative AI.
“Discussions during all the Warung Kopi sessions were the most memorable for me because I gained many interesting insights from fellow administrators, both technical and non-technical. Despite these challenges, the Wikimedia community in Indonesia remains grounded in strong values: a shared commitment to free knowledge, volunteerism, and consensus-based collaboration. WikiCendekia 2026 marks an important step in sustaining administrator capacity, leadership, and cross-project collaboration to support the long-term growth of free knowledge in Indonesia.
WikiCendekia 2026 marks an initial step and reflects Wikimedia Indonesia’s commitment to supporting administrators in sustaining the free knowledge movement, while strengthening the role of local communities in developing and managing Wikimedia projects in Indonesia. Strengthening administrative capacity must be nurtured through continuous learning spaces, open dialogue, and meaningful support for administrators.
