When Travel Fails, Learning Continues: A Reflection from EduWiki 2025

Author: ZI Jony
Summary: Journey to EduWiki Conference 2025 was unexpectedly cut short when I was denied boarding in Istanbul, despite having all required documents. Though disheartened, I turned the setback into a reflection — rewriting my session into a Diff article and staying connected remotely. Kind gestures from the community reminded me that support doesn’t end at the airport gate. This story is a reminder that even interrupted journeys can still inspire and contribute.

A Journey Interrupted

EduWiki Conference 2025 in Bogotá was meant to be a milestone in my Wikimedia journey. I had two sessions accepted, leave approved, and a Colombian visa issued. But when I reached Istanbul Airport to board my connecting flight, I was suddenly denied boarding — despite having all the right documents. No clear reason was provided, and I was left with no option but to return.

It was frustrating, disheartening, and deeply disappointing.

From Disruption to Reflection

Though I couldn’t attend, I refused to let the situation define the experience. One of my sessions — *“Crafting Impactful Education Newsletters”* — was kindly presented on my behalf by Bukola. The other, about enhancing mobile-friendly contribution in Wikimedia Education, remained unpresented.

To make the most of this setback, I:

  • Traveled to Dhaka during my leave to spend time with family
  • Rewrote my session content into a reflective article for Diff
  • Stayed connected with EduWiki updates from afar
  • Continued supporting my community remotely

A Reminder of Community Care

Days later, I received the EduWiki 2025 conference kit — my name badge, stickers, materials, and even snacks — personally delivered by Akbar Ali, with visa reimbursement arranged by Bernardo Caycedo.

This thoughtful gesture reminded me that even when things go wrong, the Wikimedia community doesn’t forget its people.

What I Learned (and What You Can Do)

Travel can be unpredictable — especially with transit security or visa misunderstandings. For future travelers:

  • Double-check transit policies for your passport and visa combination
  • Carry printouts of embassy emails, visa approval notices, and official conference invitations
  • Contact organizers immediately if you face issues — they may help with documentation or advice

If travel still fails:

  • Share your content virtually (Diff, newsletters, Meta, social media)
  • Reflect, document, and contribute locally or remotely
  • Let your story help others prepare better next time

Final Reflection

Wikimedia is not only about being physically present at events — it’s about being connected in purpose, values, and shared growth. My EduWiki journey didn’t happen as planned, but I still grew from it, and I hope this story inspires others to keep learning, contributing, and connecting — no matter the obstacles.

If you’ve ever faced unexpected challenges while representing Wikimedia, I’d love to hear your experience. Let’s support each other through every part of the journey.
