Reading and Editing Wikipedia in a Bangladeshi College

Summary: On 16th June, Wikimedinas of Dinajpur organized an educational program at Dinajpur Govt. City College, engaging students in promoting open knowledge. Activities focused on reading Wikipedia in the classroom, Editing Wikipedia and promoting contents according to the syllabus. This event empowered students to edit to free knowledge while developing skills in reading, research and translation.

Education Campaign program at Dinajpur Govt. City College

On June 16, 2025, We have arranged a short Education Campaign program at Dinajpur Govt. City College of Bangladesh. This program was collaborated with Wikimedia Bangladesh and the authority of the college.

A group of higher secondary level college students came together to comprehend Wikipedia and Education program. In the event students gather knowledge on reading Wikipedia in the classroom and editing on it. They were informed that they can edit and add information after opening an account. They can also translate articles from English to Bangla, with a special focus on their Syllabus. 13 students were involved in the program. Two professors were actively present on the program. The students shared their impressions about the usefulness of their learning in the classroom. For several hours, participants worked collaboratively to open their account, started reading some articles, add information in several articles, got some ideas on open knowledge and uploading photos on Commons. The teachers worked also got the idea of the tools they acquired in the Wikipedia Education program. The students learn for the first time about open knowledge and open source. Students learned that they are allowed to get better ideas in their academic queries and in in particular, to have a critical view of the information circulating on the Internet.

The event served as an engaging space for students to explore open knowledge, reading, editing and translating. They can contribute meaningfully to the Wikimedia projects. It also provided a platform to discuss the importance of reliable and diverse content in the Bangla language.
