Media Literacy Portal to become a key resource for media education in Czech Libraries
Last year, Wikimedia CZ started its run towards media education. This important issue and key dimension of education in past years became the main target of libraries organisations and educational departments for 2023 and 2024. In September, close cooperation with SKIP and other stakeholders led to the establishment of the Media Literacy Portal (here). This portal is a core of media literacy activities, presented on several events for libraries.
In 2023, we started a season, which will lead to deepening the use of Wikipedia as a profound media education. During February, Wikimedia CZ also participated in the Barcamp on 17-18 February, 2023 in Olomouc, as part of the cooperation on the development of media education in libraries (hosted by Czech NGO Elpida). This workshop featured practical activities with seniors on Media Education. Together with the lecturer Pavel Bednařík (author of this article), participants learned about ways and possibilities to develop media literacy with Wikipedia as an educational tool.
This year's edition of the Media Olympiad, organized by the Moravian-Silesian Library in Ostrava culminated on 29 March 2023 with Wikimedia Chief Trainer Pavel Bednařík on the jury. The theme of this year's competition videos and tasks was fake news, which corresponds with Wikimedia's focus on promoting media literacy. Wikimedia is an official partner of the Media Olympiad, and the main lecturer Pavel Bednařík was invited to be a member of the jury that is tasked with selecting the best videos of the competing students.
Following the KISK students workshop in Brno in December 2022, this is another success in relating Wikipedia to students and media education at schools. Czech libraries and librarians realize this potential and since this year, there is a lot of preparation going on.
