Academic insights: Students at Serbian Faculties learn how to contribute to Wikipedia with topics on Scandinavian culture and Emerging technologies
Summary: As a regular activity of the Education Programme at Wikimedia Serbia, workshops are organized at Universitites with the aim of employing Wikipedia as an educational tool. During the workshops, students research topics and draft articles which support the development of research skills, critical thinking and civic contribution through sharing open knowledge from their field of expertise.
Wikipedia workshops for students at the Faculty of Philology and the Faculty of Economy at the University of Belgrade
The workshops are organized by Wikimedia Serbia and professors from the University. During March, two workshops were organized for final year undergraduate students. One for students attending the course "Contemproary Norweigan language", fascilitated by professor Nataša Ristivojević Rajković, and the second for students attending the course "Emerging informational technologies" fascilitated by professor Đorđe Stakić.
The introductory part of the workshop presents the difference between Wikimedia and Wikipedia and the basic principles and goals of Wikipedia. The second part was of a practical nature, during which there was a demonstration of editing an article in the sandbox.
Following the workshops, 36 students have chosen the topics for their assignments of writing Wikipedia articles related to the curricula of the subject in which the workshop was held. By participating, students are encouraged to share their academic knowledge in an encyclopedic manner and with the goal of contributing to the availability of information in the Serbian langauge.
Value of student contributions
This exercise motivates the students to observe their knowledge and to locate new contexts through using links within their Wikipedia articles to add new dimensions and interdisciplinary approaches to their chosen topic.
The workshops organized in March aimed to enrich Wikipedia in Serbian by contributing to topics that are underrepresented (such as articles on Norweigan culture) as well as those which benefit from academic insight and understanding (such as those related to Emerging technologies).
