Wikimedia Education Workshop at Lumbini Technological University

On December 5, 2024, Nawaraj Ghimire, a Wikimedia volunteer, organized a workshop at Lumbini Technological University(LTU) for Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence students at Nepalgunj. This interactive event aimed to introduce students to Wikimedia Foundation projects, such as Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, while equipping them with practical skills like creating user accounts, editing articles, and uploading media. A total of 28 students—19 boys and 9 girls—enthusiastically participated. During the workshop, Nawaraj highlighted the importance of free knowledge-sharing and collaborative contributions to global platforms. In the hands-on session, 20 participants successfully created Wikimedia accounts. Collectively, they edited three articles and uploaded several photographs to Wikimedia Commons. Many students were inspired by the idea of contributing to one of the world’s largest free knowledge repositories.
Student Questions and Interest in a WikiClub

The session sparked curiosity among the students, who raised several questions about creating a WikiClub at LTU to sustain and expand their contributions. They wanted to know how such a club could operate, what support it could receive, and how it might collaborate with Wikimedia Nepal or the global Wikimedia community. Students also expressed interest in focusing on local content creation, particularly by documenting Nepal's history, culture, languages, and biodiversity. He encouraged this idea, explaining how WikiClubs around the world help organize regular activities, such as edit-a-thons, photography drives, and workshops. He assured them that Wikimedia Nepal and international affiliates often provide guidance, mentorship, and resources like grants for events. However, he also emphasized the importance of self-motivation and teamwork for the club’s success.
Opportunities for Wikimedia Activities in Nepal
The workshop highlighted the untapped opportunities for Wikimedia activities in Nepal. Nepal is rich in cultural heritage, natural beauty, and unique traditions, much of which remains underrepresented on platforms like Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Students can play a vital role in documenting these aspects by contributing articles and photos. Additionally, promoting Wikimedia projects can help bridge the digital divide in Nepal by encouraging the use of free educational resources. Universities like LTU can integrate Wikimedia activities into their academic programs, fostering digital literacy and collaborative learning among students. Through platforms like Wikimedia, students can also improve their research, writing, and technical skills, making them more competitive in the global job market. Furthermore, contributing to open knowledge fosters a sense of social responsibility and global citizenship.
Challenges in Nepal
Despite these opportunities, Wikimedia activities in Nepal face several challenges. Limited internet access in rural areas and a lack of awareness about Wikimedia projects hinder widespread participation. Students at the workshop also pointed out the need for more resources in the Nepali language and tools to make editing accessible for non-English speakers. Another challenge is sustaining volunteer enthusiasm. Without proper mentorship and follow-up, interest in Wikimedia activities can dwindle. Institutions and Wikimedia affiliates must work together to provide ongoing support, such as technical training, funding for events, and recognition for contributors.
At last, The workshop was a significant step toward fostering a culture of free knowledge-sharing among Nepali students. The students’ interest in starting a WikiClub and contributing local content reflects their enthusiasm for these global platforms. However, to fully realize the potential of Wikimedia activities in Nepal, it is essential to address challenges like digital access and resource limitations. With proper support and collaboration, Nepal can become a major contributor to the Wikimedia ecosystem, showcasing its rich heritage and talent on a global stage.
