Auckland Museum's Sheldon Werner Summer Studentships programme, provides tertiary students from a range of disciplines career-relevant experience and the opportunity to learn alongside Museum professionals.

As part of this programme, Auckland Museum's Collection Information and Access team are hosting a cohort of six students as part of the Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland local histories Wikiproject.

The Wikiproject, now in its third year, originated in 2023 when Auckland Museum staff began investigating how Wikipedia could be used as a learning resource in secondary schools for the new compulsory Aotearoa NZ Histories Curriculum. Initial research consulted New Zealand teachers and their attitudes towards the use of Wikipedia as a classroom resource.

With the introduction of a local history element to the Aotearoa New Zealand history curriculum that focuses on applying broad historical themes and methods to local contexts, the project was created to focus on enhancing local Wikipedia suburb pages of Auckland.

As content has been developed and the project broadened, there is now a strong focus on creating diverse content that fills knowledge gaps and addresses systematic bias in history and on Wikipedia.

This year the programme has expanded to incorporate placements at other Auckland GLAMs, such as MOTAT, New Zealand Maritime Museum and The Fletchers Trust Archives. The students are aiming to utilise the research and resources of their GLAM placement to enrich and diversify Wikimedia content about Auckland.

The student programme runs for 10 weeks from November 2025 to February 2026. To read more about the project and follow along the student's contributions, visit the Wikipedia Summer Students Project Page 2025/26.
