Meetup at GLAM Wiki Conference 2025

EduWiki Hub had organized a Meetup at the GLAM Wiki Conference 2025 in Lisbon where we had got the chance to connect with Wikimedians, educators and cultural professionals, and gather feedback to improve their initiatives. This event provided an opportunity to make our work fruitful to expand our experience.

GLAM-Wiki 2025

We participated in several events during the conference. Among them, we organized an EduWiki meetup on October 31, where we discussed with GLAM professionals, educators and Wikimedia volunteers from Asia, Europe and Africa. In the meetup, we discussed the different processes of organizing educational programs in Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums.

Topics of Discussion

Participants presented their views on organizing and participating in their community activities in various ways. They shared their challenges and ideas with us are as follows: 1. There is not enough information in Wikipedia articles on government agencies or educational institutions. There are some complexities in creating or improving articles by collecting information from institutions. Also, the restrictions of these institutions vary from country to country. Therefore, institutional barriers and government prohibitions arise in creating articles. 2. When a Wikimedian becomes interested in working and researching in educational institutions; then the main challenge is cooperation. The solution for this can be the cooperation of the supporting teachers and librarians of the institution.

Positive insight

While promoting the Wikipedia article, Wikimedians get the chance to know a teacher or a librarian who has a positive attitude towards Wikimedia. At that time, if students are motivated to use Wikipedia for assignments, then students can start contributing to the wiki for their studies. Editathons or Wikimedia events at the institution can increase interests on Wikimedia. Arrangements to provide certificates for those who participate in the event can increase the interest in Education Programs. For this purpose, institutional support, especially from librarians and administrators, plays an important role in encouraging reading and editing activities in Wikimedia projects. These events should spread positive stories about EduWiki among students.

Collaborative opportunities

Participants in this meetup suggested practical ways to connect EduWiki with GLAM work:

Organizing joint Wiki community programs with schools, colleges, and libraries.
Organizing seminars, workshops, and editathons for students and teachers.
Encouraging students to improve Wikipedia articles about their own institutions.
Presenting educational GLAM activities in newsletters and community updates.
Displaying visual contents from GLAM collaborations on Wikimedia Commons.
