Completion of the MOOC Paleography course on the Wiki
On Saturday, August 30th, the MOOC Paleography on the Wiki came to an end. This online and synchronous course aimed to provide an overview of the social history of written culture, with a special focus on cursive writing from the 14th to the 19th century. The course started on June 1st, 2024, and was organized by the company Memória e Arte and Wiki Movimento Brasil. It was led by Professor Alícia Duhá Lose.
The course already includes all the necessary classes on the course page. Its goal is to help participants read historical documents, recognize the diplomatic characteristics of documents, understand the individuals involved in creating and circulating documents, and focus on the institutions that possess or own these documents. Additionally, it aims to identify and analyze material elements essential for pinpointing the writings in space-time coordinates. The practical part of document transcription utilized tools from Wikisource, a Wikimedia platform that allows the transcription of handwritten documents, books, and source texts available in the public domain or under a free license.
The Philology Sector of the Institute of Letters of the Federal University of Bahia, the Center for Global Studies of the Open University of Portugal, and the Public Archive of the State of Bahia were the partner institutions for this course. You can view the activity metrics through the action.
Editathon History Journal on Wiki, focusing on Wikidata

The History Journal on Wiki Editathon was a collaborative effort between researcher Geferson Santana, the História Editorial project, the Editor Aprendiz Program, and Wiki Movimento Brasil. The main aim of this initiative was to motivate students from various public and private universities to input metadata of scientific journals and articles related to Brazilian history into Wikidata. This activity allowed us to explore the Wikidata platform, which is a freely licensed database, as a valuable online repository for scientific publication data. The project entailed engaging with the Wikimedia community to advocate for the creation of new properties to better serve the specific requirements of scientific journals. For detailed metrics, please refer to the action dashboard.
The História Editorial Project, a partner in this initiative, aims to publish and disseminate scientific knowledge. The project conducts research, produces scientific texts for dissemination, and works on projects to provide open access to historical knowledge, such as through Wikimedia platforms. Its activities align with inclusive guidelines, as outlined in Brazilian laws 10.639/2003 and 11.645/2007, and strive to promote diversity and equitable, anti-racist education in schools, universities, and civil society. Projects like Wikidata and other Wikimedia platforms are powerful tools for the dissemination of knowledge in the field of history and contribute to the democratization of knowledge.
Experience Report: Development of MOOC Course on "Introduction to Basic Audiology"
This resource tip for the month is an experience report from the article "Building a Connectivist Online Course: Wikiversity in Hearing Health Education." The report explores the potential of projects like Wikiversity and Wikipedia in using active methodologies for hearing health education.
The cMOOC Introduction to Basic Audiology discussed in the report was a collaborative effort between the Bauru School of Dentistry at the University of São Paulo, four universities from three different regions of Brazil, and the University of Montreal in Canada. The project also received support from Wiki Movimento Brasil.
Educators looking to incorporate Wikipedia and Wikiversity into their classes will find tips, strategies, and results of using these platforms in university educational activities. The report also offers a reflection on connectivist theory and presents inspiring research. This reading is recommended for those interested in innovative ways to democratize access to scientific production and build increasingly reliable, accessible, and free knowledge.
