The first cohort of the ‘Wikipedia in Classroom’ Bootcamp brought together 12 teachers from cities in the interior of Côte d’Ivoire. Over three days (18–20 August 2025), they will be trained on the use of Wikipedia as a teaching tool for the 2025–2026 academic year. This collaborative program, led by Wikimedia Côte d’Ivoire, strengthens teachers’ digital skills and promotes open education in the region, creating a sustainable dynamic between the Wikimedia movement and education stakeholders. The Yoruba Wikipedia Fan Club Offa achieved historic wins, dominating July 2025 contributions by securing the top three positions for the highest number of articles created on Yoruba Wikipedia, as part of a monthly program organized by Yoruba Wikimedians User Group to appreciate and encourage Yoruba editors. They also won three prestigious contests, including the Africa Wiki Challenge 2025 and Write for the Rights Nigeria 2025, despite being new editors with less than 90 days of account creation. Their success showcases teamwork, dedication, and passion for sharing knowledge, serving as a shining example for other Wikimedia clubs. Read more…

In June 2025, faculty from twelve Spanish universities met in Madrid to launch a Collaborative Network of instructors using Wikipedia in higher education. This first meeting laid the groundwork for sharing teaching practices and fostering open knowledge among universities. Read more…

During Wikimania Nairobi 2025, a group of educators and wikimedians gathered to share teaching experiences with Wikipedia and explore ways of collaboration. The meeting highlighted the daily work in the classroom and the transformative impact of free knowledge. The proposal emerged to create an informal network for exchange and support among educators who use Wikipedia as a pedagogical tool. Read more…

EduWiki conference 2025 provides more than simply a conference; it provides a replicable model of inclusive, collaborative learning as countries struggle with urgent concerns like educational inequality, disinformation, and digital disruption. It would be wise for policymakers to observe, encourage, and modify its tenets—as well as its methods—as they influence education in the future. Read more…

Festival of Media Education takes place every summer since 2020. It is organised by teacher Michal Kaderka and his team at Grammar School Gymnázium na Zatlance in Prague. Already for the fourth time Wikimedia CR tutors led workshop focused on use of Wikipedia and other projects in (media) education. Pavel Bednařík and Lucie Schubert from Wikimedia Czech Republic presented different lessons, which can be provided in the classroom with pupils or students. St. Aloysius University hosted a comprehensive Wikipedia training session on 9th March 2025, aimed at introducing new students to the world of Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia and its sub-projects. At more than 4,000 meters above sea level, the community of Visviri is working to keep the Aymara language and ancestral knowledge alive in virtual spaces. Students and teachers at the local boarding school are documenting stories, traditions, flora, and fauna, combining them with digital skills that will accompany them beyond the classroom. Read more…

in 2024, Wikimedia Australia collaborated in a teaching and research project with La Trobe University, Melbourne. An assignment which formed part of the science communication outcomes for a third-year microbiology course was developed in conjunction with Dr Katelyn Mroczek, Lecturer in Microbiology and two mentors from Charles Sturt University, Associate Professor Thiru Vanniasinkam and Dr Brian McSharry. Students undertook a group assessment in which they compared Wikipedia articles and AI-generated content on immunology topics. Surprisingly, students did not find the Wikipedia articles easier to read than most textbooks, and a number of students found the Wikipedia articles on immunology were as difficult to read as scientific journal articles. They rated the AI-generated articles on immunology topics as easier to read for a lay audience. The inaugural program had 65 students, and it is being repeated with a new cohort in 2025 with ongoing support from Belinda Spry and Alice Woods from Wikimedia Australia. Read more…

The Wiki Loves Academics campaign, led by the WUGN Kaduna Network team, trained students and academics in Wikidata editing through two online sessions and a physical meetup. The focus was on documenting Kaduna State scholars, especially PhD holders and professors, with hands-on activities to improve their representation on Wikidata. Read more…

Attended the Cebu WikiConference 2025 as a paper presenter, sharing the milestones of CBSUA Wiki Education—the first university-led Wiki Education program in the Philippines—which also received the Award of Excellence for advancing free knowledge. The event not only highlighted CBSUA’s growth and future plans, including an upcoming MOU and a Knowledge Commons initiative, but also sparked wider conversations on sustaining local Wikipedias and the vital role of human involvement in the movement.
