Egypt Wikimedians User Group's Board of Trustees is the administrative body overseeing the user group's activities. It is responsible for making decisions on behalf of the user group members and for official representing the user group for external parties

The User Group which is officially recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation, applies the Wikimedia movement's governance rules. Therefore, the group elects its board according to its bylaws and under the supervision of WMF. Furthermore, EGWUG will soon become a NGO and an official entity in Egypt. According Law No. 149 on Regulating the Exercise of Civil Work in Egypt a board must be elected to manage entity.

After its election, the board members choose a chairperson by vote. They also appoint a treasurer, liaison officer, and an executive director, who is a board member. However, in cases of discussing executive matters or holding any member of the executive management accountable, a meeting of non-executive members is held.

Responsibilities

According to the bylaw, the board's roles are:

  • Developing the user group's annual plan for the upcoming year by the end of each calendar year.
  • Developing and approving the user group's annual budget and monitoring the expenditure of funds.
  • Selecting and appointing the Executive Director, the Treasurer, and the Communications and Relations Officer, ensuring their performance, and monitoring their workflow. The Board has the right to dismiss any of these officers based on a vote.
  • Selecting the user group's representatives to attend conferences and events.
  • Determining the mechanism for accepting members into the user group and making decisions to revoke the membership of any individual in the user group.
  • Approving and establishing executive committees and defining their activities and operations.
  • Discussing and approving any statements, partnerships, projects, event representations, or official decisions of any kind concerning the user group.
  • Holding regular monthly meetings and annual meetings.
  • Electing and removing the Chair of the Board of Trustees by a majority vote.
  • Voting to remove any Board member in accordance with the rules.

Composition of the Board

The Board consists of an odd number of at least 5 members. The number of members may be increased by two members for every 200 new group subscribers, provided that the total number of Board members does not exceed 15. Board members perform their duties on the Board on a voluntary basis without pay or financial compensation. Board members can select non-voting members for the Board of Trustees. non-voting may attend Board sessions but do not have the right to vote.

When the group was first founded, two members (New Zeus and Ahmed Mohi) volunteered and offered their names as contacts and representatives. In 2015, a number of users were chosen to represent the group's administration, including: (New Zeus - Ahmed Mohi - Mohamed Ouda - Walaa Abdel Manaem - Ibrahim Elaidy - May Hachem93 - Reem Al-Kashif).

The user group's administration was renewed annually by acclamation. By 2019, a large number had resigned, leaving only two members.

In 2022, it was decided to restructure the group's administration by establishing bylaws and internal rules. Four members were chosen to form a temporary board for the group, including: Mohamed Ouda - Walaa Abdel Manaem - Ibrahim Elaidy - Donia.

Following a vote by the members on the bylaws, the first group elections were held in January 2024 under the supervision of an election committee of two well-known administrators from Wikipedia projects (who did not vote). The elections resulted in the success of four members (the same temporary board).

In 2025, the group members unanimously decided to extend the council's term for an additional year, postponing the elections to the following year. Elections were held in January 2026 under the supervision of an election committee and using Wikimedia's secure poll system. Five members were elected, and the elected board decided to appoint two non-voting members, bringing the total to seven.
