Editathon - AfroCreatives WikiProject + Films in Egypt 2025

The Egypt Wikimedians User Group, in collaboration with AfroCreatives WikiProject, organized an editathon, which aims to enhance content on African arts significantly and the film industry on Wikipedia, focusing on the history of African cinema, biographies of renowned African creators and professionals, notable African films and television series, African film studios, streaming platforms, awards, festivals, guilds, film institutes, and other institutions shaping the industry’s ecosystem, advances in animation, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and other technologies influencing African filmmaking, film financing, government policies, skills development, and other key issues in the sector.

This year’s edit-a-thon will specifically focus on creating articles about Egyptian cinema and Egyptian filmmakers in both the Arabic and English Wikipedia.

The event ran from 18 August – 23 August 2025, with an online session on 22 August to introduce the editathon to the participants and to explain how to edit on Wikipedia.

On 23 August, the Group organized an offline editathon in the Greek Campus, Downtown Cairo, where participants were involved in writing and editing articles related to the topic.

Winners & awards

After the workshop ended, prizes were distributed to the most active participants during the workshop. There were 3 prizes: first, second and third. plus a special award for the most diligent user, especially if they are new users editing Wikipedia for the first time.
