Egypt Wikimedians User Group/GLAM/World Heritage Day 2026

18 April 2026

To mark World Heritage Day on April 18, 2026, Hassan Hamdy, a member of the Egypt Wikimedians User Group/GLAM Team, covered some of the events held for the occasion.
These included the celebration and exhibition "Nile Measurements Through the Ages," held at the Manasterly Palace in Manial El-Rawda, Cairo. The event was organized by the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the Cultural Development Fund, with the participation of several sectors of the Ministry of Culture, and in cooperation with the Faculty of Archaeology at Cairo University.
The Nilometer at El-Rawda is a World Heritage Site within Historic Cairo, and the Manasterly Palace also houses the Umm Kulthum Museum.
The celebration featured the opening of exhibitions showcasing historical photographs from the Supreme Council of Antiquities and travelogues from the National Library, along with a display of specialized books on the history of the Nile.
The event also included performances of traditional Egyptian folklore, such as the Tanoura dance and the Mizmar (a type of oboe).
At the end of the day, Hassan went to the Egyptian National Library, where he attended an archaeological seminar on the restoration of the Khayr Bek Mosque and the Umm Sultan Shaaban Madrasa.
