GLAM team of Egypt Wikimedians User Group. Founded in 2025, A project dedicated to the User group's GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) activities in Egypt.


Objectives

The GLAM Team was established in late 2025 in response to the pressing need to address the limited attention and activity dedicated to the GLAM field across the MENA region, while also reflecting the Egypt Wikimedians User Group’s broader ambition to diversify its activities, expand its partnerships, and explore new areas of engagement. From the outset, the team sought to move beyond one-off activities and establish a stable and sustainable foundation for long-term work in the GLAM sector. During its initial phase, the team focused primarily on museums as a starting point, using these institutions as an entry point for developing experience, establishing working methods, documenting cultural heritage, and building relationships with potential partners.

As the team gains experience and develops its internal capacity, its vision is to gradually extend its work beyond museums to encompass other areas of the GLAM ecosystem, including galleries, libraries, archives, exhibitions, and other cultural institutions. This expansion is intended not only to broaden the scope of Wikimedia Egypt’s cultural heritage activities, but also to create more opportunities for volunteers to contribute according to their interests and skills. At the same time, the team aims to attract and retain new active and enthusiastic members, strengthen its organizational structure, and develop the skills required to sustain increasingly diverse and ambitious projects.

Despite this progress, the team remains in an early stage of development and continues to rely heavily on individual initiatives and the commitment of a relatively small number of active contributors. This presents an important challenge to the continuity and scalability of its work. Consequently, one of the team’s central priorities is to gradually transform its activities from initiatives driven primarily by individuals into a more coordinated and sustainable model based on shared responsibilities, capacity building, knowledge transfer, and long-term planning. By establishing stronger internal capabilities and a broader base of active contributors, the team seeks to create a foundation that can support the continued growth of GLAM activities in Egypt and contribute to the development of a more sustainable GLAM ecosystem within the wider MENA Wikimedia movement.

Guidelines

Section One: Membership and Participation

  • Anyone, whether from within or outside the Wikimedia Egypt User Group, may participate in GLAM Egypt activities, provided they comply with each activity's requirements and have an account on the relevant platform or project.
  • A team member should have sufficient familiarity with Wikimedia projects, particularly Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata, and must have at least the Autochecked user right.
  • Team members are not expected to participate only in the activity; they may also be required to contribute to the organization or preparation of an activity. Accordingly, members should be active users with a good understanding of GLAM and the nature and objectives of its activities.
  • No one may identify themselves as a member of the GLAM Team, speak on its behalf, or officially represent it without the approval of the Team Manager, in consultation with the User Group and with the Group being informed accordingly.

Section Two: Activity

  • Typically, two GLAM activities are held each month, timed to coincide with relevant events and occasions, particularly those related to GLAM.
  • Every activity should be planned and prepared in advance in a way that ensures clear outcomes and tangible benefits, rather than being conducted merely for the sake of holding an event.
  • Activities should be prepared and announced sufficiently in advance, with a minimum notice period of one week, allowing participants to learn the details of the activity and prepare for participation.
  • The idea for an activity should be presented to and discussed with team members before its launch, taking their views and feedback into consideration to ensure that the activity is aligned with the team’s objectives and benefits from the experience of its members.
  • The EWUG Board of Trustees should be informed of the activity in advance before it takes place.
  • When organizing in-person activities, weather conditions, public holidays, religious holidays, and any other circumstances that may affect participants’ ability to attend should be taken into consideration.
  • An activity may be postponed to another date if the surrounding circumstances are not favorable, with an alternative date to be determined at the earliest suitable opportunity.
  • All team activities must comply with the policies of the Wikimedia Egypt User Group and Wikipedia’s Safe Environment Policy, and activities should be organized in a manner that ensures a safe and welcoming environment for all participants
