Egypt Wikimedians User Group is based on bringing together volunteers in Wikimedia projects within Egypt, with the aim of creating strong links between volunteers, providing them with support, helping them to carry out any volunteer activities, as well as training new people to engage in Wikimedia projects. Therefore, memberships are a fundamental pillar of the user group, and therefore the user group is keen to bring in new members, and even help them to engage in the administrative structure of the group if they wish to do so.

Joining the user group is free and open to everyone, provided they meet the membership requirements. This page provides all the information about memberships and their rules, how to join, and what the benefits and responsibilities of membership are.

Membership Benefits

After receiving a membership ID you have the right to:

  • Vote or run for Board of Trustees elections.
  • Request joining the user group's teams and sub-committees.
  • Participate in all the group's events and activities, and to attend its conferences, sessions, and meetings.
  • Receive Travel Scholarship, Micro-grant, Promotional items, gifts, printed materials, subscriptions, and Several forms of support

The User group Does not give any money directly to members for their activity; all members work on a voluntary basis except for staff who are employed to perform administrative work.

Types of Memberships

Memberships in the user group are divided into:

Active Membership

This is a member who meets the membership conditions and has obtained a membership number. This member has the right to participate in all group events and activities, including conferences, sessions, and meetings, and to receive benefits and in-kind gifts. They also have the right to vote in the Board of Trustees elections and join the staff of the user group's executive and sub-committees.

Honorary Membership

This is a membership granted exclusively by invitation from the Board of Trustees, and it may be granted to anyone even if they do not meet the membership conditions. Honorary members have the right to attend all group events and activities, including conferences, sessions, and meetings, and to receive benefits and in-kind gifts. However, they do not have the right to vote in the Board of Trustees elections or join the staff of the executive and sub-committees.

Membership Conditions

This paragraph defines the conditions for active membership and joining the user group:

  1. The member must submit the joining request personally or provide written consent. It is not permissible to create memberships for others or act on their behalf without their desire.
  2. The person must be an Egyptian national or a resident of the Arab Republic of Egypt (regardless of their nationality).
  3. According to the Foundation's instructions, the member's age must not be less than 14 years.
  4. Must have a registered account on Wikimedia projects.
  5. Must be active on one of the projects and have no less than 100 contributions.
  6. The applicant must agree to register their real name and email with the membership officers (this information remains confidential and is not shared).
  7. Must agree to the user group's charter and the clauses of its Code of Ethics and Conduct.

Admission

  1. If you meet the membership requirements, please enter your name on this page.
  2. Fill out the user group membership form to activate your membership and obtain full membership.
  3. The user group's membership department will review the request and get back to you as soon as possible.
  4. You will receive an email confirming your membership, containing your membership ID and your account on the user group website, as well as links to members' chat rooms.

Membership status

Full Membership

The member who fulfills all the conditions, has registered through proper procedures, has filled out the membership form for the user group, his membership has been confirmed and a membership ID number has been sent to him.

Inactive

Any member who is absent from user group activities, meetings, gatherings, elections, or has no contact whatsoever with the user group's management for a period exceeding two years will be considered inactive.

Inactive members are ineligible to participate in elections and will not receive invitations to meetings or conferences unless they reactivate their membership.

The Membership Department monitors member activity and reports to the Executive Director. The membership list is continuously updated to identify active and inactive members.

Suspended

Members whose membership is suspended by a decision of the Board of Trustees, as a result of violating the code of conduct or committing legal violations against the user group.

Termination of Membership

The membership of any person in the user group may be terminated or suspended in the event of the following:

  • Registering incorrect or misleading data or manipulating the fulfillment of membership conditions.
  • A request from the member themselves to cancel their membership addressed to the Board of Trustees.
  • The issuance of an administrative decision by the Board of Trustees to revoke the membership as a result of violations of the Code of Ethics and Conduct.
  • Complete inactivity of the member and lack of communication or attendance at any group events or activities for more than 5 years.

Responsibilities of Members

Members shall:

  • Respect the User Group's Charter, Rules and Policies.
  • Follow the User Group's Code of Conduct and applicable Wikimedia UCoC during activities.
  • Follow and participate in the User Group's activities as much as possible..
  • Use User group resources responsibly.
  • Respect the private rooms of User group members only, and do not leak any information pertaining to other members.
  • Good citizenship, concern for the interests of the user group, helping to promote it with non-members, reporting any negatives.
