Empowering GLAMs

Empowering GLAMs is an initiative that aims at engaging all GLAMs – all international cultural institutions such as galleries, libraries, archives, museums, theatres, and universities — in implementing open access and in cooperating with Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects.

The initiative has developed a workflow to enable all institutions to engage. The workflow includes

Improving data about cultural institutions on Wikidata
Creating a database of GLAMs contacts (in collaboration with ICOM)
Contacting all GLAMs
Supporting GLAMs
Documenting and producing case studies.

The initiative was launched in Italy in 2022-2024 in the frame of the pilot project Empowering Italian GLAMs (Tutti i musei su Wikipedia) and it continues in Italy with the name "Tutta la cultura su Wikipedia". In 2024 Argentina implemented the approach.
