Background[edit]

This event is about hosting a panel conversation focusing on the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR}of women in Nigeria to mark the 2023 International women’s day. Though there has been improvement in health systems globally, particularly as it affects Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), in Nigeria and other developing countries not much have been achieved as women and adolescent girls continue to suffer from lack of access to SRHR information and services with negative health outcomes and in most cases death. The 2023 International Women’s Day with the theme #EmbraceEquity is a good opportunity to highlight this issue and how it affects women and girls in Nigeria. Information access is very critical in enhancing the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls and Equity Watch Initiative (E-WIN) would like to raise a conversation about this issue particularly focusing on how we can leverage on Wikipedia to promote information sharing regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights in Nigeria.

Aim[edit]

  • The major aim of the event was to highlight sexual and reproductive health issues in Nigeria and to learn how we could leverage Wikimedia projects, innovation and technology to enhance sexual and reproductive health and right in Nigeria to promote gender equality.
  • It was targeted at bringing this important issue to the attention of Wikimedians to see how they could improve on available information on SRHR given the effort of Wikimedia Foundation on information access and open knowledge. This is considered important given that we could leverage Wikimedia Projects to improve on SRHR information. It was also geared towards Sensitizing the attendees to understand that access to SRHR information is a fundamental human right.

Outcome[edit]

The Equity Watch Initiative Art + Feminism panel Conversation was an online event organized by Equity Watch Initiative (E-WIN) as part of her events to mark the International Day of women 2023. The conversation centered on how we could leverage Wikipedia, innovation and technology to enhance information access on sexual and reproductive health and right. The Host User: Chiemezie Atama gave the opening remark, as she welcomed all the participants and encouraged effective participation and open conversation. The conversation featured User: Oby Ezeilo as a guest speaker. she spoke leveraging Wikipedia to enhance information access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Right. Where she took participants through what through the basic knowledge of what Wikimedia Foundation is about. Participants were also educated about Movement Strategy emphasizing the need for information access and the work that the Wikimedians do. She connected this to how Wikimedia could help us to enhance information on SRHR and beckoned on the participants to join the movement. The second guest speaker, Habiba Ghazali the program manager Education as a Vaccine (EVA) spoke on how we could leverage technology to enhance SRHR. She mentioned different technologies including Frisky that her organization is leveraging to address SRHR particularly for the adolescents. Sixteen participants joined the call and it was a very interactive session. The moderator of the seesion Dr Aloysuis Odii made the conversation very engaging and interactive. Participants were given the opportunity for Question-and-Answer session of which the guest speakers were very much happy to entertain. Dr. Chiemezie Atama in her closing remark appreciated Art+Feminism group for proving the platform for the conversation and thanked everyone for joining the call. Many participants were not able to sign there name on the participant list as there were not Wikimedia and did not have Wikimedia account. However, they were encouraged to create and account and the link for creating account was shared on the chat box.
