The February training series is designed to equip participants with essential skills in Wikipedia editing and Wikimedia Commons contributions. Each session will provide hands-on learning, interactive discussions, and Q&A sessions to ensure the practical application of the concepts covered.

Wikipedia Training I

Training overview

There seem to be a significant knowledge gap when it comes to understanding Wikipedia's policies. Many people are eager to contribute, and excited by the idea of creating articles and increasing their edit count. However, in their enthusiasm, they often overlook the fundamental policies that govern Wikipedia’s ecosystem. As a result, well-meaning editors may unintentionally violate Wikipedia’s guidelines simply because they were never aware of them in the first place.

This lack of awareness often lead to content distortion, policy breaches, and even frustration when edits are reverted or articles are deleted. While passion and active participation are essential, a strong foundation in Wikipedia’s policies is just as crucial to ensuring that contributions are accurate, verifiable, and in line with community standards.

Objectives

• Gain a clear understanding of what Wikipedia is
• Learn the fundamental guidelines for editing Wikipedia, including its rules and regulations, and notability criteria.
• Develop practical skills in editing Wikipedia articles

Expected Outcome

By the end of this training, participants will:

• Gain a clear understanding of Wikipedia and how it operates as a collaborative knowledge platform.
• Demonstrate knowledge of Wikipedia’s fundamental guidelines, including rules, regulations, and notability criteria.
• Apply proper editing techniques to contribute well-structured and verifiable content.

• Learn image upload and management
• Improve visual documentation

Expected Outcomes

By the end of this training, participants will:  

• Be able to use Wikimedia Commons tools efficiently to contribute high-quality images and media files.  
• Demonstrate the ability to upload and manage images following best practices.  
• Apply visual documentation skills to improve the quality and relevance of contributions.  
• Correctly license and attribute images while ensuring compliance with copyright policies.
