Overview

The African Wikipedian Alliance (AWA) EmpowerHer Project 2026 is a collaborative initiative by Code for Africa (CfA), in partnership with the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD).

The project aims to amplify the visibility of African women and promote gender equity across Wikimedia platforms by creating and improving content on Wikipedia and Wikidata in secure and accessible digital spaces. We will focus on these countries: Ethiopia, Chad, South Sudan. Check out the fellowship page here

  • The project will run from 1st March 2026 – 31st March 2026.

How to participate

1 Sign in or Create a New Account on Wikipedia if you haven't.

2 Register on the event page and the dashboard to track your contributions.

3 Attend virtual training sessions, participate in the edit-a-thon and complete the participants contribution form.

4 Create, expand and/or translate articles and Wikidata items related to the focus area from the topic list.

5 While publishing your edits, include this hashtag in your edit summary: #AWA-EH

Activities

1. Virtual Trainings: We will host virtual training sessions focused on:

  • Creating and improving Wikipedia articles
  • Creating and improving Wikidata items

The focus will be on African women in the Sahel region and the Horn of Africa, ensuring regional representation and closing content gaps.

2. Edit-a-thons

  • Edit-a-thons will be organized.

Active participants who meet the requirements will receive a $10 reimbursement at the end of the program, in line with program guidelines.

3. Content Translation Training

  • Virtual training sessions will be conducted on how to use the Wikipedia Content Translation Tool, with the objective of:
  • Bridging the language gap between the English Wikipedia and local African languages
  • Expanding access to knowledge in underrepresented languages
