Overview
[edit]The AWA EmpowerHer Project is a fellowship-supported initiative under the AWA 2026 Fellowships.
The project aims to bridge the gender content gap on Wikipedia and Wikidata by increasing the visibility of women of Somalia, Sudan, and Cameroon origin through structured contributions, community engagement, and skills development.
Through training sessions, edit-a-thons, and mentorship, the project seeks to strengthen women's participation and improve representation, support new and existing contributors to increase quality content related to African women.
Timeline

How to participate

Register on the event page and dashboard to track your contributions.
Attend virtual training sessions, participate in the edit-a-thon and complete the participants contribution form.
Create, expand and/or translate articles and Wikidata items related to the focus area from the topic list.

Training Sessions
[edit]Training sessions will be organized to build participants’ capacity in contributing to Wikimedia projects. The sessions will cover:
- Introduction to Wikipedia
- Introduction to Wikidata
- Creating items on Wikidata
- Editing Wikipedia articles (including adding infoboxes, categories, and citations)
- Expanding and improving existing articles about women of Somalia, Sudan, and Cameroon
