The Africa Wiki Challenge is an initiative designed to generate and enhance African content on Wikipedia, with a particular focus on issues that are central to the African continent’s history, development, achievements, and ongoing struggles. The annual competition strives to enhance information about Africa on Wikipedia and its sister projects. The Africa Wiki Challenge 2025 in Burundi is part of the broader Africa Wiki Challenge organized by Open Foundation West Africa (OFWA) and this time Wikimedia Community User Group Burundi joined the compaign and others affiliates to orgnize a local campaign in Burundi. This local campaign focuses on improving and increasing content related to Burundi and Africa in general on Wikipedia and its sister projects. The initiative aims to highlight Burundi’s rich history, culture, development journey, notable figures, and ongoing efforts toward national growth and resilience.
Through this local contest, Burundian participants are encouraged to contribute articles, images, and other relevant content that reflect the country’s unique identity and significance within the African context. By doing so, the campaign empowers local voices to shape how Burundi is represented online, helps bridge the African content gap, and promotes free access to accurate, locally sourced information about Burundi.
Theme
[edit]In 2025, the Africa Wiki Challenge will focus on the theme "Reclaiming Our Narrative: Justice for Africans and the Diaspora through Reparation", aiming to address the historic injustices of colonialism, slavery, and systemic exploitation while advocating for reparations for Africa and its Diaspora. This year’s theme aligns with the African Union’s movement for justice and reparations and aims to amplify the voices of those impacted by historical and contemporary injustices,
The initiative seeks to enrich global understanding of reparations and elevate the voices of Africans and their descendants through the creation and enhancement of content on Wikipedia, focusing on the historical, social, and political realities that shape the reparations debate.
Why take part in the Africa Wiki Challenge?
[edit]Africa is the second-largest continent on Earth but lacks sufficient content online in comparison to other continents on the globe. In April 2024, African content comprised merely 2.69% of the total 4,815,057 articles on Wikipedia. Presently, African contributors constitute only 1.91% of the 185,723 active contributors across the platform. Botswana’s contributions to African history, politics, economy, and culture are significant, yet they are often overlooked or inaccurately represented in global knowledge repositories. Africa Wiki Challenge is an annual effort to improve the depth and quality of Botswana-related content online, empowering people to tell their own stories and ensure historical accuracy. The objective of this campaign is to enhance the representation of Africa on Wikipedia by contributing more content.
Since 2021, the Africa Wiki Challenge initiative was launched to improve these statistics and reshape the online narrative. As organizers, we appreciate the ongoing efforts of editors and Wikipedians globally. Africa deserves comprehensive coverage to address the existing content gap on the web. The Africa Wiki Challenge (AWC) invites contributions on Africa from individuals in Africa and the diaspora. Join us, and let your contributions advocate for Africa!
