How to Organise a Local Event

Would you like to participate in the Africa Wiki Challenge and organize activities in your city, country, or community?

This campaign welcomes volunteers, Wikimedia communities, institutions, and partners who are interested in hosting activities that contribute to documenting Africa’s knowledge and heritage.

Follow these simple steps to join the competition.

Step 1: Sign up with your details to officially organize the contest.

You can organize different types of events, including:

  • Edit-a-thons
  • Training workshops
  • Virtual meetups
  • Community editing sessions
  • Awareness or outreach campaigns
  • University or classroom editing activities

If you are planning an event, you can also connect with subject matter experts, campaign partners, and experienced Wikimedians who can support you with training materials, guidance, and mentorship.

Host an Online Event

Overall Campaign Metrics

The Africa Wiki Challenge aims to achieve the following continental goals:

  • Engage at least 1,000 contributors across Africa and the diaspora.
  • Translate 1,000+ pieces of content into African and diaspora languages.
  • Reach 5,000+ people on social media through awareness campaigns.
  • Improve articles across Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects related to the campaign theme.
  • Mentor and support new communities in countries or regions without established Wikimedia groups.
  • Retain at least 25% of all participants beyond the campaign.

Metrics for Individual Communities

Local organizing communities are encouraged to aim for the following targets:

  • Engage at least 60 participants in campaign activities (online or offline).
  • Create or improve at least 200 articles related to the campaign theme.
  • Improve content across Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects related to African knowledge.
  • Reach at least 500 people through local social media outreach.
  • Retain 25% of participants as ongoing contributors after the campaign.

Promote Your Event

Share photos, event highlights, and learning moments using the campaign hashtag and help amplify Africa’s knowledge on Wikimedia platforms.
