Why Should You Participate?

Africa is the second-largest continent on Earth but remains underrepresented online compared to other regions of the world.

The Africa Wiki Challenge invites participation from individuals across Africa and the diaspora. Join the campaign and help amplify Africa’s knowledge on the web.

Eligibility

The Africa Wiki Challenge (AWC) welcomes participants from diverse backgrounds who are interested in contributing knowledge about Africa.

Eligible participants include:

Africans across the continent
Individuals of African descent
Anyone interested in documenting African knowledge and heritage
Anyone with a valid Wikipedia account

Duration of the Writing Contest

The contest will run from:

26 May 2026 – 30 June 2026

During this period, participants are encouraged to create new articles and improve existing content related to the campaign theme.

Follow these simple steps to join the competition.

Step 1: Sign up with your details to officially participate in the contest.

Create Account

Step 2: Create a Wikimedia account if you do not already have one.

Register

Step 3: Register through the campaign page to track your contributions.

Criteria / Points Allocation System

The scoring system for the contest is based on the size of content added or created.

Article Creation

12 points – Article with a minimum of 4000 bytes

8 points – Article between 3000–3999 bytes

6 points – Article between 2000–2999 bytes

4 points – Article between 1000–1999 bytes

3 points – Article between 500–999 bytes

2 points – Article between 100–499 bytes

1.5 points – Article between 50–99 bytes

1 point – Article between 1–49 bytes

Article Improvements (Edits)

10 points – Edits adding 4000+ bytes

8 points – Edits adding 3000–3999 bytes

6 points – Edits adding 2000–2999 bytes

4 points – Edits adding 1000–1999 bytes

3 points – Edits adding 500–999 bytes

2 points – Edits adding 100–499 bytes

1.5 points – Edits adding 50–99 bytes

1 point – Edits adding 1–49 bytes

Prizes

Outstanding contributors will receive cash prizes for their efforts in documenting African knowledge.

1st Prize – GHS 10,000

2nd Prize – GHS 6,000

3rd Prize – GHS 3,500

Top Female Contributor – GHS 4,000

Best Photo Upload (Wikimedia Commons) – GHS 4,000

Overall Top Newbie Contributor - GHC 3,000
