Overview
[edit]Accelerating Action for Gender Equality 2025 is a campaign by the Africa Wiki Women geared towards bridging the gender gap across Wikimedia projects, with a focus on celebrating and documenting African women, especially those in the journalism and political sectors, through community-driven content creation.
We invite Wikimedians, professional photographers, and experienced regional organisers to join this campaign as we bridge this gap, highlight the contributions of African women in journalism and politics, and promote gender equity.
Be part of this campaign as we close gender gaps and create content for African women in journalism and politics.
Our Goal:
- Expanding and improving 100 articles about African women in politics and journalism
- Upload 50 quality images of African women in journalism and politics.
- Improving 300 Wikidata items about Women in these fields.
- Host 9 hybrid events to train and empower new and existing editors to contribute to this campaign.
How to get Involved
- Attend training sessions (hybrid) & participate in the photo hunts
- Translate, edit and improve articles and items relevant to this.
Activities
[edit]Edit-a-thons: Hybrid edit-a-thons will focus on creating and expanding articles about African women journalists and politicians, adding sources, infoboxes, and proper categories for the African Women Journalists category, to improve their visibility and representation on Wikimedia platforms.
Image and Multimedia Upload Campaign: To enhance visual representation, this activity will focus on uploading images and relevant media of African women journalists and politicians to Wikimedia Commons.
Content Translation into African Languages: To improve accessibility and inclusivity, selected biographies will be translated into various African local languages. This will help bridge the language gap and ensure that the stories of notable African women are accessible to wider audiences across the continent.
