Introduction

The Wikipedia on Aruba project host monthly Ban Wiki! gatherings were you can drop by to ask your questions about the project, meet other Wiki-minded people and start editing!

In this Wikipedia workshop, participants will collaborate to create new articles about artists from Aruba on Wikipedia. To support this, we will use curated collections of Aruban artists available in both physical and digital formats as source material.

During the first session, participants will be introduced to Wikipedia’s editing tools. You will learn how to start an article using the sandbox, structure your content effectively, and add reliable references and sources.

Everyone is welcome to join—no prior experience with Wikipedia is required. Guidance will be provided throughout the session, and participants are asked to register in advance.

If you want to edit, bring a laptop or you can also use the computers available at the library.

By participating, you will help document Aruba’s cultural heritage by creating and improving articles about local artists on Wikipedia, expanding the island’s artistic representation and making this knowledge accessible to a global audience.

And there will be food & beverages :)!

How to Prepare

To actively participate in this session, you will need to create an account on Wikipedia. This will give you full access to the platform’s editing tools.

If you’re not sure how to create a Wikipedia account, don’t worry. You can find a verbal explanation in Papiamento on our YouTube channel, or use this step-by-step guide on our knowledge platform, in Papiamento to guide you through the process.

PAP-Wikipedia volunteers have created a short course on how to use Wikipedia. You can easily access it by going to pap.wikipedia.org, then typing “Wikipedia:Curso rapido” in the search bar and following the instructions.

17:00 – 17:20	Introduction & Aruban artists collection	Presentation of the Aruban artists collection and overview of the materials that will be used during the workshop.
17:20 – 17:40	Introduction to editing on Wikipedia	Overview of basic editing tools, including how to create and use the sandbox for drafting articles.
17:40 – 18:20	Structuring a Wikipedia article	Guidance on how to structure an article, including sections, encyclopedic tone, and formatting standards.
18:20 – 19:00	Adding references and improving articles	Hands-on practice with adding reliable sources and strengthening article content.
