Overview

[edit]

The Description Translation Project is a collaborative Wikimedia session aimed at improving multilingual access to content on Wikimedia Commons through the translation of image and media descriptions. The event will bring together Wikimedians, translators, language enthusiasts, and open knowledge advocates to contribute to making content more accessible and discoverable in igbo language.

Scheduled for 29 May 2026 at 5:00 PM WAT, the session will provide participants with practical guidance on translating descriptions effectively while contributing to the visibility of African content and global free knowledge resources. Participants will also learn how translation supports accessibility, representation, and knowledge equity within the Wikimedia movement.

Who Can Join

[edit]

The event is open to everyone interested in language, translation, Wikimedia projects, and open knowledge. Experienced Wikimedians, new contributors, students, educators, librarians, translators, and volunteers from different language communities are all welcome to participate. No advanced technical experience is required, as guidance and support will be provided during the session.

Why You Should Join

[edit]

Joining the Description Translation Project gives participants the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to multilingual knowledge sharing and digital accessibility. Participants will gain hands-on experience translating descriptions on Wikimedia Commons, collaborate with contributors from the communities, and help increase the visibility of content in Igbo language.

The session is also an opportunity to strengthen language representation on Wikimedia platforms, connect with other volunteers, and support inclusive access to information for users around the world.
