Overview

The Earth Cadet Project - Wiki for Climate action is a biodiversity-focused initiative sponsored by The Nigerian Girls' Guide Association, in collaboration with partnering organizating including the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria - Akwa Ibom Network, the Women in Nature Conservation Organization, (WINCO) and Inclusive Environmental Sustainability Advocacy Network, (IESAN). This project will take place in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

Objective

The Earth Cadet Project in Akwa Ibom State, aims to build a community of environmentally conscious women who are equipped to take action, share knowledge, and inspire others. It will an opportunity to educate and empower women with knowledge about biodiversity, environmental sustainability, and climate action. Through a series of engaging workshops and practical activities, participants will take part in the Biodiversity Education Session, Wikipedia & wikicommons training, and also tree planting exercise..

Biodiversity Education Session

The Biodiversity Education Session will be an opportunity to train participants on the importance of environmental conservation and the critical role biodiversity plays in sustaining ecosystems. Centered around SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land), the session will provide participants with valuable insights into climate issues, species protection, and sustainable living. Participants will also be introduced to how Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects support biodiversity documentation.

Tree Planting Exercise

The Tree Planting Exercise will serve as a practical step toward promoting environmental sustainability and combating climate change. Participants will plant trees as a symbolic and impactful action in support of SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land). The exercise will not only help restore green spaces and improve biodiversity, but also raise awareness about the importance of trees in preserving ecosystems, reducing carbon emissions, and protecting natural habitats. It will also serve as a community-building activity, encouraging collective responsibility for our environment

Wikipedia Training

Participants will be trained on how to document climate action-related topics on Wikipedia, thereby contributing to global knowledge resources. The training is virtual and will take place on

Wikicommons Training

Participant will be trained on how to upload relevant images to Wikimedia Commons, promoting visual representation of environmental efforts.
