Embracing Openness in African Libraries through open licensing digitisation in Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana.

Project Overview

The project "Embracing Openness in African Libraries through Open Licensing Digitization" aims to promote open access to cultural heritage and knowledge in Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana. By digitizing library collections and applying open licenses, the project seeks to: Increase access to knowledge: Make cultural heritage and historical materials more accessible to the public, researchers, and students. Promote open education: Support open educational resources and practices, enhancing learning opportunities and outcomes. Foster collaboration: Encourage partnerships among libraries, institutions, and communities to share knowledge and resources. .

PROJECT GOAL

The project objectives include: Digitization: Digitize library collections in Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana, focusing on materials related to African culture, history, and knowledge. Open licensing: Apply open licenses to digitized materials, enabling their reuse, sharing, and adaptation. Capacity building: Train library staff and stakeholders on open licensing, digitization, and digital preservation. Community engagement: Engage with local communities, researchers, and educators to promote the project's outcomes and benefits. Train librarians across Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana in digitization, metadata curation, and Wikisource documentation. Partnering with national library chapters, the program emphasizes copyright education, Creative Commons licensing, and public domain awareness, enabling local professionals to lead open knowledge efforts in their communities
