Event:Improving African Authors and Books Items

The Wikidata: Improving African Authors and Books Items event is designed to enhance the representation and accessibility of African literature and its creators within the global open knowledge ecosystem. Despite the continent’s rich literary heritage, many African authors, poets, and literary works remain underrepresented or inaccurately documented on Wikidata. This gap not only limits global access to African literary contributions but also affects the visibility of African knowledge sources across Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects that rely on structured data.

This project seeks to bridge that gap by organizing a collaborative editing and data improvement session focused on creating, updating, and enriching items about African authors and their books on Wikidata. By doing so, we aim to ensure that African literary voices are properly documented, connected, and discoverable within the digital knowledge landscape. The event will also empower participants, both new and experienced editors, with practical Wikidata skills while deepening their understanding of how structured data supports knowledge equity across languages and regions.

Objectives

Train participants on how to create and edit items on Wikidata
Create African and black literature items (authors, publishers, books) to strengthen the African literature data.
Contribute to the global goal of closing the knowledge gap on Wikimedia projects, ensuring fair representation of Africa’s and Black intellectual heritage
