Key points

Overview of the Africa Wiki Challenge in the Tyap Community

  1. AWC is an annual event on the African Continent.
    • The international organisers for the AWC are the Open Foundation West Africa.
    • The Africa Wiki Challenge 2026 is co-organised by four Wikimedian communities: the Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba and Tyap Wikipedian communities.
    • The target for the AWC 2026 in the Tyap community is the creation of at least 20 articles
    • The purpose is to create more Wikipedia articles in the Tyap Wikipedia and improve existing articles related to the theme, which is Water for Life.
    • As of this meeting, 91 articles had been created, 452 articles had been edited, and 16 editors had been active, with a few registered privately in the Tyap Wikimedian community.
    • The competition is scheduled to end by 10th July, so community members were encouraged to make more active efforts in uploading pictures, creating new articles, and improving existing articles.
    • Due to financial constraints, the prizes for the 2026 AWC winners are not big, with 50,000 naira for the top contributor, 30,000 for the second contributor, and 20,000 for the third.
  2. Overview of activities in the Tyap Wikimedians User Group from April 2026 to date
    • The first event we had in the community since our last community meeting was Wiki Loves Earth 2026 in the Middle Belt. Before that period, we had the Mentor Me Stream 1 program on the 3rd of April.
      • We had about 75 participants registered in the Mentor Me event who went through a series of lessons both online and in-person.
      • The in-person sessions were held from 9 am to 3 pm WAT, while the online sessions were held from 7 pm to 8 pm WAT, even though some of the online sessions were adjusted due to time zone differences.
      • We had facilitators from about 5 continents to facilitate the online sessions: Africa, North America, Asia, Europe, and South America. That was quite enormous compared to what we had last year.
      • Participants from the former Mentor Me sessions also facilitated the in-person Mentor Me program.
      • Participants are encouraged to practicalize what ever they learnt from all the online sessions.
      • The next stream of the Mentor Me session will start in September.
    • After the Mentor Me event, we had the Audio Walk 2026 across 6 dialects of Tyap and Jju.
      • Audio renditions were collected in the 6 dialects and transcribed in IPA sound system.
      • Some activities have not been carried out according to the time stipulated, but hopefully, they will be carried out before the year runs out.
      • The major challenge facing the community is a knowledge setback; we need people who are knowledgeable in linguistics to help with the technicalities of the project.
    • The next event we had in the community was the Wiki Loves Earth 2026 in the Middle Belt, which was the first time we hosted this event in the community.
      • The event was held between 1st June to 30th June, and was a collaborative project with the Igala Wikimedia community.
      • The areas covered for this event include the Gurara Waterfall, Jos Wildlife Park, Yankari Game Reserve, and the Zoo in Abuja.
      • Not less than 35 participants registered and participated in the event.
      • About 941 images were uploaded, and we hope to upload more.
      • We didn't have a smooth start for the event because we were expected to operate as Wiki Loves Earth in Nigeria, rather than Wiki Loves Earth in the Middle Belt. Hopefully, in the near future, localized community can independently organize their events as a region rather than as a country as a whole.
      • The biggest challenge we had for WLE was that the uploads began in the third week of June, which was quite late, and which led to insufficient time to upload all the pictures.
    • We also had the Ayangkanan Wiki Afrika 2026 mi Naijeriya (Africa Wiki Challenge).
      • We had 17 participants registered for the event.
    • For future events, we will have Wikimania Paris 2026, which will be held from the 21st to the 25th of July, 2026.
