[edit]This session is part of the Wiki Loves Africa 2026 Training and Webinar Series and is designed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of uploading media files to Wikimedia Commons.
Wikimedia Commons is a free media repository that allows contributors to upload and share images, audio, and video files for use across Wikimedia projects. This training will provide a practical, step-by-step guide on how to upload files correctly, ensuring that they meet Wikimedia standards for quality, licensing, and documentation.
Participants will learn how to contribute valuable media that helps document Africa’s rich culture, heritage, and everyday life.

Chinonso Chidi is a Biomedical Scientist, and Researcher. He is a member of the Wiki Loves Monuments International Team, and a Wiki Loves Africa Ambassador 2026. As an Administrator on the Igbo Wikipedia and Igbo Wiktionary, he's committed to the open knowledge movement, heritage preservation, and indigenous language advocacy, with several impactful projects. His work is defined by volunteer support, community capacity building, and both regional and global collaborations.

What You Will Learn
[edit]By the end of this session, participants will have a clear understanding of how Wikimedia Commons works as a free media repository and how they can effectively contribute to it. They will learn how to upload images, audio, and video files, while also gaining knowledge of copyright principles and free licensing requirements. In addition, participants will understand how to write proper file descriptions, add relevant categories, and apply best practices for sharing high-quality media. The session will also highlight common mistakes made during uploads and how to avoid them.
