Bridging Education and Cultural Heritage: How Uzbek Students Document Architecture and Art through Wikimedia Projects

[edit]

Abstract/description

[edit]

This session explores how Wikimedia projects can connect education with cultural heritage preservation through a practical model implemented in Uzbekistan. In recent years, I have been working with university students to introduce them to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and digital literacy skills. During this process, students not only learned how to contribute to open knowledge but also participated in documenting local architecture, mosaics, monuments, and folklore [1]. Drawing on my own fieldwork — including photographing neighborhoods across Tashkent and contributing to international contests such as Wiki Loves Folklore — I demonstrate how young contributors can play a meaningful role in preserving cultural heritage while improving their research, writing, and media literacy skills. The talk will present strategies, tools, and real examples that educators and community organizers can adapt to empower new contributors and strengthen GLAM-education collaboration.

Relationship to Wikimedia Australia, Wiki skills, the Wikmedia Movement

[edit]

This session develops key Wiki skills, including writing and improving Wikipedia articles, uploading cultural heritage photos to Wikimedia Commons, and using reliable sources. It builds on my ongoing achievements in photo documentation and student engagement within the Wikimedia community. The proposal directly supports the conference theme by connecting education with GLAM work and demonstrating how new contributors can preserve local heritage through Wikimedia projects.
