Statements to Structure: Curating a Wikidata Set
[edit]Abstract/description
[edit]Wikidata is often approached as a place to add individual facts, but it becomes far more powerful when you start by being clear about what you want to build and why.
This talk uses the ACT’s protected areas, a small, well-bounded set with WDPA identifiers, to show how defining your goal and finding the data available to you shapes the curation decisions that follow. We’ll look at deciding what belongs in the set, and how structure, identifiers, constraints and simple queries help you check whether you’re actually achieving what you set out to do.
The session focuses on practical thinking and available tools: how to move from “I can add statements” to “I have a dataset that represents the items in my topic of interest.”
Relationship to Wikimedia Australia, Wiki skills, the Wikimedia Movement
[edit]This talk supports skill development in Wikidata literacy, helping contributors understand how planning, structure, and identifiers translate into higher-quality Wiki outcomes across whole sets of items.
