As part of Wiki Loves Africa 2026, this training session introduces participants to the art of the creating audio — using sounds to tell compelling stories that document Africa’s rich cultural heritage under this year’s theme, Rites and Rituals.”

Audio plays an important role in enriching knowledge on Wikimedia projects. From pronunciation recordings and ambient sounds to cultural music and storytelling, audio files help make knowledge more accessible and engaging for everyone.

This training session is designed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of creating and preparing audio for upload to Wikimedia Commons. Participants will learn basic tips for recording quality audio, explore beginner-friendly approaches to audio creation and mixing, and gain an understanding of how sound can be documented and shared as open knowledge.

The session will be practical, beginner-friendly, and focused on empowering contributors to document sounds from their communities and share them for Wiki Loves Africa through Wikimedia Commons.


Trainer

He is Mohammed Kamal-Deen Fuseini with username: Dnshitobu from Tamale, Ghana. He has been a Wikimedian contributor since 2019 as a member of the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group and a former Wikimedian in Residence for the Wikidata for Education project. He is currently a member of the SSA regional fund committee and grants manager at the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group. He is a teacher and cyber security and digital forensic expert.

Objectives

The training aims to:

  • Introduce participants to the importance of audio in Wikimedia projects
  • Teach basic principles of recording clear and usable audio
  • Provide an introduction to sound design and audio mixing basics
  • Help participants understand how to prepare audio files for Wikimedia Commons
  • Encourage contributors to document and share sound recordings from their communities

Who Should Attend?

This session is open to both new and experienced Wikimedians who are interested in contributing multimedia content to Wikimedia projects. It is also suitable for Wiki Loves Africa contributors who would like to document sounds such as environmental sounds, and cultural audio recordings. Anyone curious about sound documentation, storytelling through audio, or contributing audio files to Wikimedia Commons is welcome to participate, and no prior audio editing experience is required.
