Wiki Loves Africa 2026 Launch

[edit]

The Wiki Loves Africa 2026 Launch Event in the Igala Community is an introductory session designed to welcome Igala Wikimedians and new contributors to the 2026 edition of the annual continental photography and media contest.

Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) is an annual contest where anyone across Africa can contribute free media that is relevant to their experience to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia communities (Wikimedia movement), and also make this shared media freely available for the Humankind.

The 2026 theme, Rites and Rituals encourages participants to document traditional ceremonies, cultural practices, spiritual gatherings, initiations, festivals, and other rituals that reflect the diverse identities and heritage of African communities.

The launch event aims to introduce members of the Igala community to the Wiki Loves Africa 2026 campaign and provide a clear understanding of how they can participate. It will explain the 2026 theme, “Rites and Rituals,” and highlight how documenting traditional ceremonies, cultural practices, and community gatherings can help preserve Igala heritage on open knowledge platforms.

The sessions will also provide practical guidance on how participants can contribute photographs, videos, and audio recordings to Wikimedia Commons, making these resources available for use on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
