Wiki Loves Earth is an international photography competition organized annually to raise awareness of protected natural heritage sites across the globe by sharing them freely through Wikimedia platforms, primarily Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. The contest invites everyone, professional photographers, enthusiasts, and nature lovers. to participate by capturing and uploading images of natural heritage areas under a free license.
Wiki Loves Earth Photowalk in Moncton is an in-person community event designed to introduce participants to Wikimedia Commons and guide them through the process of contributing high-quality images to free knowledge platforms. During the event, participants will learn about Wikimedia Commons, photo licensing, image uploads, and how to write clear and detailed descriptions that make images more useful and discoverable.
Places To Visit
[edit]Participants will visit and photograph natural areas in and around Moncton, including
- Hopewell park,
- Irishtown Nature Park,
- Centennial Park,
- Mapleton Park,
- Mill Creek Nature Park.
The photowalk will focus on capturing eligible Wiki Loves Earth subjects, including landscapes such as forests, wetlands, lakes, trails, and notable trees, as well as macro and close-up images of animals, birds, insects, plants, fungi, and other natural subjects.
Impact
[edit]This activity aims to increase awareness of Wikimedia Commons, develop photography and documentation skills, strengthen local Wikimedia engagement, and contribute freely licensed images of Moncton's natural heritage for use across Wikimedia projects and beyond.
Rules
[edit]The following are the rules to observe regarding pictures and videos for Wiki Loves Earth:
- Be self-taken
- Be self-uploaded during the contest period
- Be under a free license;
- Contain an identified natural reserve or natural park
- Have at least 2Mpx.
- No watermark on photo
- No Ai generated images
- Preferably taken recently
