Wikimedians of Kerala is conducting a workshop and photowalk at Kerala Folklore Academy Kannur on 15 March 2025. [edit]The Wiki Loves Folklore Workshop 2025 was successfully held on 15 March 2025 at the Kerala Folklore Academy in Kannur. Organized by Wikimedians of Kerala and coordinated by Manoj K. and Shagil Kannur. The workshop aimed to document and preserve Kerala’s rich cultural heritage through Wikimedia projects. Participants made significant contributions across multiple Wikimedia platforms. A total of 378 new articles were created and 4430 files are uploaded into Wikimedia commons. There was an hands on traning happened on uploading media into Wikimedia Commons. Jinoy training the participants on how to improve the folklore items on Wikidata. More than 100 Wikidata items was improved as part of the event.

[edit]Following the workshop, a photowalk was organized at the Kerala Folklore Academy in Kannur. The participants actively explored the premises, capturing photographs and videos that showcased the institution’s cultural heritage, and traditional artifacts. These media files were later uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, contributing valuable visual documentation of Kerala’s rich folklore and traditions to the open knowledge ecosystem. The activity not only encouraged hands-on learning about Commons uploads and metadata but also promoted collaboration among participants through a shared effort to enrich freely accessible cultural content.

Documention of Kathivannur Veeran
[edit]As part of the post-workshop activities, a photowalk was organized to document the Kathivannur Veeran Theyyam at Mambalam, Payyannur. Participants captured the vibrant rituals, performances, and cultural elements associated with this traditional Theyyam.
The photo walk provided an opportunity for participants to experience and document one of Kerala’s most iconic folk art traditions in its authentic setting. The collected photographs and videos were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, enriching the open repository with valuable visual content that preserves and promotes the intangible cultural heritage of Kerala.

Documention of Vayanattu Kulavan, Gulikan and Vishnumurthy theyyam
[edit]A photo walk was organized to capture the Kandanaar Keelan Theyyam at Kakkampara, Ettikulam, Kannur. Participants photographed and recorded the vibrant performances, intricate costumes, and rituals that form an integral part of this Theyyam.
In addition to Kandanaar Keelan, the team also documented other prominent Theyyams such as Vayanattu Kulavan, Gulikan, and Vishnumurthy at Karakkeel Tharavadu, Ettikulam, as part of the same initiative.
The activity provided an immersive cultural experience for participants while contributing valuable visual documentation to Wikimedia Commons. Through these uploads, the event helped preserve and share the living heritage of North Kerala’s Theyyam traditions with a global audience, promoting awareness and appreciation of the region’s intangible cultural legacy.
