Event:Wiki Loves Public Domain/Commons
Introduction
[edit]A central aim of Wiki Loves Public Domain is to significantly increase the volume of public domain works available on Wikimedia Commons. We specifically target materials from creators whose works have recently entered or are entering the public domain. Our process for engaging participants in this area is straightforward:
- Identify Public Domain media: Discover and select Public Domain works from relevant creators (see list below for inspiration).
- Upload to Wikimedia Commons: Contribute these works to Wikimedia Commons, ensuring proper licensing and categorization.
- Enrich biographies: add the newly uploaded media to the corresponding creator biographies, enhancing the articles with visual and auditory content.
Scope & rules for participation
[edit]For the Wikimedia Commons part of the Wiki Loves Public Domain (WLPD) competition, you can participate in two ways:
- Add a Public Domain media from a creator
- add Public Domain media to an existing article about a creator
You can work in any language Wikipedia you want.
Rules for participation
[edit]Because the competitions focuses on cultural heritage, your contribution needs to be:
- from a creator that has entered the Public Domain on january 1st 2025 (having passed away in 1954) or before that.
- from a creator that has works in a cultural heritage collection
- done within the competition period (from 1 October to 31 December 2025)
- added to the result list
You can work in any language Wikipedia you want, but to help you get started there are lists of creators that entered the Public Domain in 2025 below.
Prices are awarded based on the total amount of points :

[edit]In order to be eligible for points you need to be registered to this event so we can contact you when you have won a prize. Just login with your Wikimedia account and register by clicking the blue button 'Register for event' on the homepage.
Work lists / suggestions
[edit]This list contain creators who have died in 1954 and that have work in Belgian, Dutch or French collections that have fallen into the Public Domain on or before January 1st 2025 and whose works can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Use the 'has works in the collection' on the Wikidata page to see if works of this creator can be found and uploaded to Commons. Please take the Wikimedia Commons project scope into account when uploading a media file!
