Event:Wiki and GLAM : Harnessing Knowledge to Foster Gender Equality/hu

Only 19% of Wikipedia biographies are about women, and women and gender-diverse contributors represent about 20% of active editors. This projet aims to build stronger collaborations with GLAM institutions. The co-leads first connected at a GLAM Wiki 2025 workshop on gender, where participants from around the world shared experiences of Wiki projects tackling gender inequality with GLAMs. They noted that these initiatives are often fragmented, limiting shared learning, and identified the need for a centralized space and practical resources.
We aim to create such a space for gender organizers to exchange experiences, learn from one another, and document good practices. Over four months, it seeks to produce learning resources in formats defined by participants, helping organizers avoid repeating mistakes. The ultimate goal is to lay the groundwork for an international Community of Practice focused on strengthening gender-focused GLAM initiatives, by identifying past experiences, sharing them widely, and outlining a roadmap for future action.

Lessons learned
Here we collect the lessons we have learned from our conversations with Wikimedia gender organizers who have participated in GLAM projects. What are your thoughts on these? Do you have any other suggestions? Let us know! Send an email to wikiglamgender@gmail.com or join our Telegram group here.
- Look around: try to identify GLAM institutions in the region that are already doing gender-related work. They might be ready for a partnership, but haven't yet been involved in Wikimedia projects.
- Think about “mirrored learning”: both Wikimedia and GLAM teams take the time to learn from each other. Your team of editors will learn about their gender-related project, for example.
- Consider other formats besides edit-a-thons and Wikipedia pages. What about Wikiquotes, if you are working with a library? You can focus on a specific topic, such as works by LGBTQIA+ or female writers from a certain era, nationality, or subject.
- Plan in advance: both Wiki and GLAM teams show up prepared for the encounter with something tangible to contribute.
- Make it interesting for volunteers. Invite a guest speaker who can talk about a gender-related topic. If possible, offer a small gift, like a book.
- Remember that socializing is an important aspect of encounters, especially with external volunteers. Women are often care-takers, and it's hard to find time to meet people outside of family and work. Make sure that the GLAM institution hosting the event understands the time required.
- Snacks are expected! Make sure that the GLAM institution is aware that food will be served at the event.
- Involve everybody in the institution, even people who might not be directly participating in the event. It’s important that they all know what’s happening, including reception and security. Invite them in! This shared knowledge about past Wikimedia events will become part of the institutional culture, so that even if current leaders leave, someone else can coordinate new initiatives in the future.
- Museums are sometimes unwilling to share images due to copyright restrictions. Consider partnering with an illustrator — many will be interested in contributing to open knowledge and gender equality.
- Consider that GLAMs are very feminized workspaces. By building partnerships with these institutions, you will have access to women working as curators, librarians, archivists, exhibition designers, educators, archaeologists, etc. They might become interested in contributing with Wikimedia in many different ways, not limited to editing. A museum researcher might become a contributor to Wikispecies, or can be the guest speaker to an edit-a-thon.
