Wikimedians of Kerala: Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) 2025

Opening and Welcome:

The meeting commenced at 10:00 AM with Ranjith welcoming all members to the Annual General Body Meeting. He provided a brief about the User Group's history, noting that while the group’s official activities gained significant momentum around 2018, they have successfully established a strong legacy through major events like Wiki Sangamolsavam.

Athul presented the annual report on technical spaces and student engagement. Over the past year, the User Group has focused heavily on training the next generation of contributors, successfully conducting workshops at institutions like AJCE Kanjirapally and Chinmaya College. Notably, students from Chinmaya College were present at the WikiConf Kerala 2025, signaling the success of these outreach efforts. The group also expanded its visibility by hosting a Wikimedia stall at IndiaFOSS, engaging the public with games and activities, and participating in various technical hackathons both within India and internationally.

The group was informed that while the initial bid to host WCI 2025 in Kochi was approved, it was unfortunately cancelled due to unforeseen issues. However, a subsequent request routed through the Open Knowledge India (OKI) team and IIIT Hyderabad has been successful. It was officially announced that the Wikimedians of Kerala will host WikiConference India 2026 in Kochi during September 2026. Final logistical details regarding the conference are expected to be shared with the community later.

During the round-table session each member introduced themselves detailing their contributions to the Wikimedia movement and sharing personal experiences and stories from their journey. This exchange highlighted the diverse activities within the group ranging from content creation to technical support and maintenance. Activity remains strong across various Wikimedia projects with active contributions reported in Malayalam Wikipedia, Wikisource and Commons. Notable updates included Siji’s leadership on the "SheSaid" campaign and the "100wikiquotedays" challenge, Jameela’s design work for community campaigns, and Vijayan’s coordination of Wiki Loves School. The meeting also welcomed insights from guests Loganathan and Sreedhar from the Tamil Wikisource community, fostering cross-community collaboration.

Strategic Discussions and Future Plans

The floor was opened for strategic discussions regarding the future of the User Group. A key highlight was the presentation of the Wikimedians of Kerala Annual Plan 2026, which outlines the strategic roadmap for the upcoming year. The plan was shared with the attendees accompanied by an open invitation for all community members to actively participate in its implementation.

Discussions also focused on the upcoming Wikipedia 25^th Birthday celebrations. The members reviewed plans to organize a major celebratory event in different places in Kerala.

Netha raised significant concerns about the declining quality of articles on Malayalam Wikipedia, emphasizing the urgent need to focus on maintenance and combating misinformation. In light of this, it was proposed to include a dedicated medical track or pre-conference session at WCI 2026, featuring experts from the medical domain. To support community growth, Athul suggested forming stronger partnerships with allied communities, such as the Free Software movement, while Shaggil proposed the reinstatement of regular monthly or bi-monthly online training sessions to keep volunteer skills sharp. Jinoy shared the training sessions that has been done during the pandemic time and agreeded on we can start those sessions again.
