In 2026, Wikipedia marks 25 years of empowering people around the world with free, reliable and openly licensed knowledge. Over the past two and a half decades, Wikipedia has grown through the collective efforts of volunteers who write, edit, translate, curate and safeguard knowledge in hundreds of languages.
Within the South Asian context, India stands out as one of the most active and diverse contributor communities, with volunteers creating and curating knowledge across dozens of languages and subject area has played a vital role in this journey. The initiative brings together Wikimedia communities, affiliates, user groups, institutions, and individual volunteers across the country to celebrate this milestone through events, edit-a-thons, discussions, workshops, exhibitions and outreach activities.
