About the Editathon

This two-week editathon is a joint initiative between Africa and Proud and the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group to create and improve Wikivoyage travel articles for towns and cities across Ghana, with a special focus on the Northern, Upper East, Upper West, North East, and Savannah regions. Participants will also help expand phrasebooks for the major languages spoken in Northern Ghana.

Goals

• Create new destination articles for towns that don't yet have one on Wikivoyage.
• Expand "outline"/"usable" articles toward "guide" status.
• Add practical travel information (Get in, Get around, See, Do, Buy, Eat, Sleep, Connect, Go next).
• Improve and expand Wikivoyage phrasebooks for Northern Ghanaian languages.
• Grow the number of active editors from Northern Ghana on Wikivoyage.

How to participate

1. Create a Wikimedia account if you don't have one, and register below under Participants.
2. Join the kick-off training on 15 August, 13:00–14:30 UTC.
3. Pick one or more articles from the lists below (or propose your own town).
4. Use the Wikivoyage article template for new articles.
5. Log your edits in the tracking table so they can be reviewed for compensation.

Compensation

Participants who make outstanding and significant edits during the editathon — substantial new content, well-sourced expansions, or multiple quality articles — will be compensated with Data Reimbursement. Organizers will review contributions after the event closes on 29 August 2026 using each participant's entry in the tracking table and their Wikivoyage contribution history.

What to improve or add

For any article, priority sections to create or expand are:

Road, bus (STC, VIP, VVIP), and shared-taxi routes; nearest airport (Tamale) and onward connections.

See

Historic sites (e.g. Nalerigu defence walls, Larabanga Mosque, palaces, slave-route relics), markets, museums — each with a short, sourced description.

Do

Festivals (Damba, Fire Festival, Kobine, Feok, Bugum), craft workshops (smocks, baskets, leatherwork), guided nature or heritage walks.

Buy

Local markets and market days, and craft items specific to the area (Bolgatanga baskets, Northern smocks, shea butter products).

Eat / Drink

Local dishes (tuo zaafi, waakye, banku) and drinks (pito, zom-koom), plus notable eateries.

Sleep

Guesthouses and hotels with a price-range breakdown.

Connect

Internet access points and mobile network coverage notes.

Go next

Nearby towns, parks (Mole National Park, Kalakpa), or cross-border routes (Burkina Faso, Togo).

General

Coordinates, locator map, updated population figures, and removal of outdated or unsourced claims.
