Fante Wikimedians Community/Fante Oral Heritage Project 2025
Fante Oral Heritage Project 2025
Preserving Voices • Recording Stories • Inspiring Generations
The project will produce a pathway for documentation of oral knowledge and culture within the Fante context.
Individuals will be trained to create and preserve oral culture content such as proverbs, folk songs, storytelling, chants, and community histories. These recordings will be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons. Selected materials will be transcribed and translated for Wikisource. Basics of Wikidata will also be explored to extract vocabulary and cultural terms from the oral content and uploaded as lexemes.
We will be sharing updates on online training sessions, discussions and outputs here.
Background
[edit]The Fante Oral Heritage Project is led by the Fante Wikimedians Community with the aim of documenting and digitizing oral culture in the Fante language.
We recognize that oral traditions — such as Fante proverbs (mmebusem), Anansesem (folktales), Asafo chants, traditional songs, and oral histories are living knowledge systems that risk disappearing if not documented. This project seeks to:
- Record oral knowledge and upload it to Wikimedia Commons
- Transcribe and translate selected recordings into English for Wikisource
- Extract vocabulary and cultural expressions for Wikidata as lexemes
- Train volunteers in audio documentation, metadata creation, and digital preservation techniques
- Create awareness on how Wikimedia projects can support the preservation and transmission of endangered oral traditions
