Description
English: Sélestat library, with statue of Jean Mentel, printer and publisher (1410-1478), signed Sichler SC, 1842. The mention in golden letters says "Mentel of Schlestadt, inventor of printing press." The Latin inscription on the marble plaque below says "In the year 1466, Emperor Frederic III gaves the coat of arms to the Schott family, the first inventor of typography."
Français : Jean Mentel, imprimeur et éditeur (1410-1478) Buste sur piédouche circulaire. Piédestal polygonal orné d'arcatures néogothiques trilobées terminées par un fleuron. Piédestal et piédouche en bois peint. Buste en ronde bosse et plaque en bas-relief en marbre. La plaque en marbre est fixée sur la façade du piédestal.


Signature et date au revers du buste : SICHLER SC / 1842. Sur le piédestal, en lettres gravées et dorées : MENTEL DE SCHLESTADT INVENTEUR DE L'IMPRIMERIE. Au centre de la plaque en marbre, armoiries aux lions couronné de plumes surmontées d'une devise dans un phylactère : VIRTUTEM MENTE CORONAT. Sur le pourtour de la plaque en marbre, en lettres gothiques : Anno Christi millesimo quadringentesimo sexagesimo sexta / Insigne Scottorum Familiae / ab Friderico Rom Imp III Joan Mentelio / primo Typographiae Inventori ac fui concessam (L'an 1466, l'Empereur Frédéric III concéda les armoiries de la famille Schott au premier inventeur de la typographie).
