Blood Flower (Asclepias curassavica ) One look at this plants vivid red blooms and you will understand why Blood Flower is a suitable name for this tropical species of milkweed. The small flowers grow from a woody base and can reach approximately three feet high. In most regions in the Eastern Ghats, Koraput, Odisha.It is considered to be an annual because it is a tropical species. The Monarchs love to munch on the Blood Flower as caterpillars and many other butterflies enjoy the sweet nectar. Blood Flowers need full sun and will be a striking addition to any garden. Attracts: Great Spangled Fritillary, Monarch, Queen, Gray Hairstreak etc. Bloodflower has been used in the past as a medicinal herb (although it is no longer suggested to do so since it can be toxic), and it is a great addition to the butterfly garden, or anybody who wishes to attract beneficial insects. Hardy only to zone 8, it is grown as an annual in most areas, but it quickly reseeds and spreads. It is an erect herbaceous plant, the Leaves are arranged oppositely on the stems and are lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate shaped ending in acuminate or acute tips. The flowers are in Cymes with 10-20 flowers each. Bloodflower is normally fairly low maintenance and is normally quite easy to grow, as long as a level of basic care is provided throughout the year.
