Het verhaal

Johannes Esser was een Nederlandse arts. Helaas is er weinig over hem bekend in Nederland. Almar Seinen vindt dat deze persoon onderbelicht is gebleven, want hij heeft veel betekend voor de plastische chirurgie in Nederland. Er is ook een instituut in Amsterdam naar hem vernoemd, dat ook zijn archief beheerd. Hij heeft veel geopereerd in Duitsland en daar ca 20.000 gezichtsreconstructies gedaan. De geallieerden wilden geen gebruik maken van zijn diensten omdat hij niet beschikte over de juiste papieren. De Duitsers wilden wel graag gebruik maken van zijn kennis. Hij kreeg een hospitaal in Brühl toegewezen. De heer Seinen heeft 7 boeken over dit onderwerp meegenomen. Hij is over Esser gestruikeld min of meer door het voorbereiden van een tentoonstelling over Nederland en de Eerste Wereldoorlog.

Het boekjes 'Was Aerztekunst vermag' geschreven door een Duitse soldaat, die aan het gezicht gewond is geraakt in WO1 en is geopereerd door Esser. Het boekje gaat over zijn verwonding en genezing en hij heeft het boekje opgedragen aan zijn arts Esser.
