Thanks for the advice, everyone. Here's a version with real characters and wikilinks instead of blue lines (and a representation with Wikipedia: pieces in tan, which now that I look back at it, wasn't what Kwekubo was talking about at all)

(Added a version with sans serif text on the sphere and tried to use a few more pixels of my 150x150 Paullusmagnus 21:15 23 Jul 2003 (UTC))

(Added a version with illegibly small text -- no formating yet Paullusmagnus 01:42 24 Jul 2003 (UTC))

Ah, much better! I'm afraid your other versions reminded me too much of the Death Star. :) -- Stephen Gilbert
Yes, really better, this one is very nice Koxinga

The Image:Paullusmagnus-logo_(small)_text_and_tan.png look like "Oh, there are some pieces that don't match". If it's here to represent the different languages, it look like there is "one" main languages and some others that don't really fit in the main project. Of course, that's not what you wanted to say... Perhaps with differents colors for all the pieces... But this will perhaps look like a toy for childs. --AGiss 17:49 23 Jul 2003 (UTC)

The tan pieces are the pages with the "Wikipedia:" namespace. I suppose that there's not much point in advertising meta-content, so I'll drop the idea. I'll consider using a variety of colors (like on the Main Page), but I can't see where I'd put them... Paullusmagnus 18:29 23 Jul 2003 (UTC)

By the way, is the text on the globe too big, too small, or good the way it is? And how about the font? WIKIPEDIA is currently in Times New Roman because that looked the best to me. I couldn't find any font with that stately double-middled-W like our current logo. Advice would be geatly appreciated. Paullusmagnus 18:29 23 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I really like this logo idea! To make it even better I suggest making the puzzle pieces a bit more random (few puzzles are so orderly) and make the text much smaller - so small that you cannot tell what script it is in. The general layout of an individual page should be presented on each puzzle piece complete with tiny photos, blue and red links. One of the pieces could have a really small periodic table, another a list, another a long right-aligned table with text next to it. But I wouldn't go nuts on all that until/if this is chosen as the winner. Hm. Integrating our mascot (so far it looks like it will be the Wikipede) into the logo might be neat too (he could be peaking from the unfinished part of the globe). --Maveric149

I'm working on a small text version. Many puzzles have just one shape for internal pieces, but it's true that Wikipedia more closely resembles those chaotic ones (or does it? we try to standardize our formating, etc...). Right now, I'm using a GIMP plugin to make the puzzle shape, which doesn't give me many options, but I might be able to think of something... Paullusmagnus 21:46 23 Jul 2003 (UTC)
I've figured out a way to make irregular puzzle pieces in POV-Ray. It just connects a lattice of points that have been perturbed, so the pieces are still arranged the same way. Is this what you meant? Unfortunately, it's going to take a while to render, so we won't get to see how it looks for a while. Paullusmagnus 15:07 24 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I like this idea, but would like to see different colored puzzle pieces--something to indicate the international nature of the project. Koyaanis Qatsi 20:57 23 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I think you probably meant that no color should dominate, but this is just a quick test, and giving white equal status might be too colorful. Paullusmagnus 21:46 23 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Hey, this colored variant looks great! Now could you remove some of the text so that the sphere is a bit "cleaner"? --Eloquence 23:59 23 Jul 2003 (UTC)
That's what I meant--with some other colors added in. I think it looks great, but maybe something just like this but with a few obviously non-Latin-based alphabets thrown in? (some Korean, some Arabic, some Indian etc.) Koyaanis Qatsi 20:46 26 Jul 2003 (UTC)

This is my favorite of the logos submitted to International logos so far. I agree with Smack that letters from different alphabets would be nice. - I am Jack's username, 2003-07-24t00:15z

Thanks -- actually the letters are from Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, and Chinese, but the text is just on the edge of readability, so you may have seen Latin characters out of expectations.
This version I had hanging around has a larger text size. Paullusmagnus 01:42 24 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I like the coloured globe. And I think it might be preferable to keep the text size just large enough to make out that they are characters, but just small enough to not be obvious that it is just a mix of them. -- Kwekubo

Do you mean the current size? It's surprising how much I can't tell about the picture I made. I can recognize individual characters, but then, I know what to expect. In the small globe, it looks (to me) like the whole text is in the Latin character set (which it isn't). Does this mean that everyone sees it as his/her native language? If so, maybe that's the right size... Paullusmagnus 15:07 24 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Here, I have the smaller text size, with some added stuff (a pencil, a world map with south at the top, the current Wikipedia logo, and a boxed-in list which is completely cut off. Come to think of it, I don't like the way it came out. None of the pictures "parse" correctly after looking at it again with fresh eyes. I took away the coloring on the areas of the pieces that had pictures on them, and that didn't come out very well. Maybe much smaller pictures? Paullusmagnus 02:01 25 Jul 2003 (UTC)

  • I like the idea of those pictures, but the only one I can see is the pencil. Am I blind, or what? And yes, the text size seems just fine. -- Kwekubo
The world is that blue rectangle on the right side. The incognito logo is almost completely invisible, falling off the left edge. The table is centered smack dab on a missing piece. I'll try again. Paullusmagnus 16:07 25 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Here are irregularly-shaped pieces.

Side note: This logo idea may be so good that it is better for Wikimedia... So plan two is to push for that if this logo doesn't win. ;-) --Maveric149 03:38 26 Jul 2003 (UTC)

This is the best logo so far (IMHO), and the original version if it is best. My only complaint is that it's a bit too complicated/cluttered. I wonder what it would look like if each puzzle piece had only one large character (from various languages), rather than all the little words we have now. --

I agree with 206 on all counts. Love this one in most of its variations, also it can be reduced to an icon or expanded to a poster. This one and the ant are my favorites. Steverapaport 08:27 26 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Should some of the characters be wikilinked? This needs color, I think, but single-letter links would look sort of funny. Paullusmagnus 22:15 26 Jul 2003 (UTC)

--- I do like the openness of this Logo. --Nerd 08:29 26 Jul 2003 (UTC)

--- I suppose you could try the single character idea, to see what it would look like... I think the irregular shapes are better than the others.

My favourite:

Not a fan of the many colours, nor of the weird blue or green lines. I also wonder if it would be good to have a couple pieces missing from the middle or bottom? --mrd

Seeing the inside of the puzzle didn't come out very well, so I used POV-Ray to give the pieces a back (I was considering using POV-Ray already, but I didn't feel like uploading a version made with it yet).
The original image in POV-Ray:
With pieces missing:

This logo is my second favourite of all. It looks highly professional, not childish or toyish. For me, it is a symbol of really serious, yet unfinished work. It does not give a clue about what number of languages is available, but it does allude to that you can find your toungue...

Personally, I like this one the best:

-- interDist

I may have to do a straw poll for text size, unless someone is able to convince me that one is inherently superior. First, however, I'll need to get my sample images straight. Once I add red links and WIKIPEDIA to all of them (and record the size that I used; currently I size the text in an ad hoc manner), I put up some sample images for voting. Paullusmagnus 22:15 26 Jul 2003 (UTC)

(didn't bother adding "WIKIPEDIA" Paullusmagnus 16:43 27 Jul 2003 (UTC))

Please put ~~~ (or your user name for your home Wikipedia) by each of the text sizes you approve of. If you prefer a size that's not here (smaller, larger, or in between), add a category for it without an image. Thanks! I'll wait at least three days before making a decision, more if there is no clear majority. Paullusmagnus 16:43 27 Jul 2003 (UTC)

These do not have the same sizes as the previous examples. I didn't remember how I got each size, so I couldn't duplicate it. This time, I've written it down. Also, the smaller text sizes appear to have lighter weight text. This can be changed.

  • Big text:

  • Medium text: MyRedDice

Btw, I hope you won't feel bound by anything suggested here - I'd rather stick to the artist's vision than end up with something designed by committee :) --mrd
I sort of felt like putting up a disclaimer to that effect, but I realized that I wouldn't be putting this up to a vote if I had a good idea what the font size should be. Looking at variations on the same theme repeatedly made the three different text sizes look the same to me and rendered me the least-qualified person here to judge. Of course, don't knock things designed by a committee, because that's what Wikipedia is... :-) Paullusmagnus 01:54 30 Jul 2003 (UTC)

To my surprise, there is a desisive preference for a single size. Barring any highly unlikely surprises, all future samples will be in approximately that text size. Thanks to everyone who voted -- I think I can now see why the small size is better-liked. Paullusmagnus 02:31 1 Aug 2003 (UTC)

The image might fit into the overall logo better if it were cropped to the shape of a puzzle piece. Koyaanis Qatsi 23:24 26 Jul 2003 (UTC)

  • What do you mean by "image"? -- Kwekubo
    • I think the dark picture of the world. At least, that's what I'm going to try. Paullusmagnus 18:54 28 Jul 2003 (UTC)

How would this be for a Wikiquote logo to fit the style? I envision a globe covered with bits of photographs of people. If I do this for real, I'll get public domain pictures of (famous, if possible) people from all races and put them on the globe instead. Paullusmagnus 17:27 28 Jul 2003 (UTC)

  • Good idea, but the jigsaw pieces are too small to permit recogniseable pictures. Try a version with bigger pictures. Also, when are you planning on doing a straw poll for version of the final Wikipedia design? -- Kwekubo
Voting: I was hoping to develop the logo mainly by consensus. I chose to have a vote for text size because it's a hard subject to discuss, and I didn't really have an opinion of my own to compare to the feelings of others. It might be a good idea, come to think of it, to put a few versions up when I think I'm done. If I do that, I'll probably start it about 5 days before Aug 20.
Pictures: I didn't really intend for them to be recognizable, I just thought it'd be more appropriate than pictures of random friends and family of mine.
