The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialized agency of the UN working to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture to further universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and human rights along with fundamental freedom. They have recently started working more with open data and have a Wikipedian in Residence hired to help them make material (both media and data) available in the Wikimedia world with compatible free licenses. UNESCO’s role in the project is to initiate contacts with countries with relevant cultural heritage data and GLAMs with media files that might be uploaded to Commons. UNESCO will also release data and media and organize and participate in events to promote the project and awareness of cultural heritage.
