Pool of activities
[edit]1. Content Projects
[edit]Our content strategy is fundamentally data-driven. A core activity in our 2026 plan is to conduct a deep, methodical census of audiovisual content gaps. This is not a one-time task to set static targets for the year; instead, it is the foundation of a continuous, dynamic process. Our agile methodology involves revisiting this census data throughout the year, combining it with real-time learnings from our projects and our community's evolving capacity to establish meaningful, realistic Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for each activity as it approaches.
We have been asked to provide specific, fixed numerical targets for the entire year in this proposal. We want to be transparent about the methodological tension this creates. This request required us to accelerate a core part of our analytical work and produce these numbers now, all while simultaneously managing other critical activities, including the complete reconstruction of this grant proposal itself.
Therefore, while we are providing the following numerical targets to meet the application's requirements, it is important to frame them as good-faith projections derived from a preliminary analysis under significant time constraints. They represent a snapshot of our current understanding. As our data-driven process unfolds in 2026, these initial estimates will evolve into more precise and strategically aligned metrics. We believe this iterative approach to metric-setting is a strength of agile workflows and welcome a continued dialogue on how to best represent this dynamic process in future grant reporting.
Activity: Expedition to a Conservation Unit (Biodiversity Focus)
[edit]- Description: A strategic fieldwork expedition to a specific, under-documented conservation area to generate a new collection of high-value, ethically-sourced biodiversity images.
- Justification: This is a strategic intervention to create a deep, high-quality dataset in a specific area, providing unique value that contests cannot (WM2030 Rec #8). The location will be chosen not only for its biodiversity but also for its relevance to local or traditional communities, with a plan for ethical engagement.
- Problems It Can Solve (Looking Towards 2030): Fills critical, specific content gaps related to biodiversity that broad contests often miss. By focusing on a single area and engaging with local communities, it can create a rich, contextualised dataset that serves researchers, educators, and policymakers, supporting conservation efforts.
- Success Metrics: To fill a critical, pre-identified biodiversity content gap by generating a high-quality, ethically-sourced image collection, measured by:
- Generating and uploading a minimum of 700 high-resolution, curated images to Wikimedia Commons.
- Ensuring at least 70% of the final uploaded images are over 15 megapixels.
- Achieving the use of at least 20 images from the expedition in Wikidata entries within 6 months of upload.
- Failure Metrics: The expedition fails to generate a significant number of high-quality images (fewer than 400 usable images are produced); ethical engagement with local communities is unsuccessful or harmful; logistical issues prevent the expedition's completion.
- SDGs: SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 4 (Quality Education).
Activity: Wiki Loves Living Heritage Expedition
[edit]- Description: An expedition to ethically source a unique collection of content on living heritage, focusing on cultural practices, festivals, or traditions.
- Justification: The expedition is designed to generate unique, high-value content on intangible heritage that a contest format cannot capture (WM2030 Rec #8). It must be conducted with an ethics-first protocol, ensuring the community has full agency over how their culture is represented and shared.
- Problems It Can Solve (Looking Towards 2030): Allows for the in-depth, respectful documentation of complex cultural practices. This ethical, collaborative approach builds trust with source communities and produces rich, contextualised knowledge that contests cannot provide, directly addressing the visual gaps for Indigenous Lands (98.15% no photo) and Quilombos (68.38% no photo).
- Success Metrics: A unique collection on living heritage is ethically sourced from the expedition, increasing the representation of the target culture on Wikimedia Commons, measured by:
- Generating at least 300 new, high-quality images.
- Producing at least one documentary short (3-7 minutes) telling the story of the community.
- Receiving positive feedback from community leaders on the documented ethics-first protocol.
- Failure Metrics: The expedition fails to source a unique collection of content (fewer than 100 images); the ethics-first protocol is breached, causing harm or distrust with the community; logistical or safety issues prevent the expedition's completion.
- SDGs: SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
Activity: Photographic Walk of Intangible Heritage
[edit]- Description: A guided walk or event focused on documenting intangible heritage, such as cultural practices, festivals, or traditions, as part of the Wiki Loves Folklore & Living Heritage campaign.
- Justification: This project directly addresses the critical content gap on Wikimedia Commons regarding Brazil's intangible cultural heritage, where our data shows only 8.30% of Festivities have photos (WM2030 Rec #8). By creating a focused campaign, it engages communities in preserving their own culture.
- Problems It Can Solve (Looking Towards 2030): Preserves and disseminates knowledge about intangible cultural heritage, much of which is at risk of disappearing. It empowers local communities to document their own traditions.
- Success Metrics: To reduce the content gap on Wikimedia Commons related to Brazil's intangible cultural heritage, measured by:
- Generating at least 200 new, high-quality images from the event.
- Engaging at least 25 participants from the local community.
- The use of at least 15 new images in relevant Wikidata entries within three months.
- Failure Metrics: Low participation (fewer than 10 participants); poor quality of images generated; few of the new images (fewer than 5) are used in Wikipedia articles.
- SDGs: SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 4 (Quality Education).
Activity: Supporting Wiki Loves Monuments (2026)
[edit]- Description: Providing effective in-kind support for the Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) contest in Brazil, in conjunction with WMB.
- Justification: Supporting WLM demonstrates a commitment to collaboration within the movement and strengthens the broader Brazilian Wikimedia ecosystem (WM2030 Rec #5).
- Problems It Can Solve (Looking Towards 2030): Strengthens the entire Wikimedia ecosystem by fostering collaboration instead of competition between different affiliate groups.
- Success Metrics: Strengthening the collaborative role within the Brazilian Wikimedia ecosystem, measured by:
- Documented positive feedback from the WLM organising team on the effectiveness of our support.
- Our promotional efforts resulting in a 10% higher reach on shared posts compared to our baseline.

[edit]- Description: The execution of the "Wiki Loves Birds 2026" contest, redesigned as a high-engagement model focused primarily on generating a rich collection of bird song and call recordings. Photographs will be a secondary category.
- Justification: This is a direct and innovative response to our data analysis, which revealed that audio is the most critically underrepresented media format (only 0.13% of living beings have audio). This "audio-first" approach contributes uniquely to content goals (WM2030 Rec #8 & #9).
- Problems It Can Solve (Looking Towards 2030): Fills a massive media gap, making articles multi-sensory. Creates a valuable scientific dataset for bioacoustics research. Engages a new contributor profile interested in sound recording.
- Success Metrics: To drive community engagement and fill a critical media gap, measured by:
- Generating and uploading a minimum of 500 new, high-quality audio recordings.
- Documenting the vocalizations of at least 20 species that previously had no audio recordings on Wikimedia Commons.
- Achieving the use of at least 50 new audio files in relevant Wikidata entries within 6 months.
- (Secondary) Receiving at least 1,000 high-quality photo submissions.
- Failure Metrics: Fewer than 150 usable audio recordings are submitted; the audio quality is poor for the majority of submissions; fewer than 10 audio files are integrated into Wikipedia articles.
- SDGs: SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 4 (Quality Education).
Activity: Wiki Loves Earth (Launch & Execution)
[edit]- Description: The successful launch and execution of the "Wiki Loves Earth" contest, engaging a broad community in documenting biodiversity and natural heritage sites.
