Abstract

Meet librarians where they are, this panel is about an approach to Wikipedia outreach to libraries that foregrounds, first, ways to answer the question of "why Wikipedia," then to give guidance and instruction on the cultural and technical skills needed to engage. The panel will be a conversation about Wikimedia program design strategies that have been undertaken in, and for, libraries in Israel, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and the United States. Presenters will share their approaches, learnings and adaption ideas undertaken to establish (and strengthen) meaningful connections between libraries and Wikimedia projects for different audiences. The proposed format is a sixty-minute session consisting of four ten-minute presentations. After the presentations, a respondent (TBD) will frame connections between panelists, pose questions, and facilitate questions from the audience.

The panel is focused on libraries, but the spirit of this approach will be valuable for outreach and educational trainers working with institutional partners more generally, particularly those interested in developing an educational program design strategy that is centered on the needs of the learners/newcomers and helping them develop human-to-human connections and ties with Wikimedia.

What will attendees take away from this session?

Attendees will take away insight including (but not limited to):

  • How to adapt and tailor library outreach materials (as Orly put it: "How to use the plans for the house -- with your own furniture")
  • Addressing the challenges of translating article content from one language to another given different socio-political situations and Wiki-cultural norms
  • Practical examples of Wikipedia-related programming and education ideas for libraries that can be adapted or reacted to
  • Deeper dive into what makes Wikipedia useful for information literacy and evaluation in Israeli, U.S. Mexican and Pakistani/Saudi contexts;
  • Gain insight into the various distinctions between library types and library education programs (publics, special collections, research university, state/national, and library schools and professional education) in various settings
  • Insight into the hearts and minds of library and information professionals
  • Program evaluation samples and caveats
